AMAZING
1st TAFELSPITZ
Gasthof Alpenrose, Samerberg
Mrs. C went for the classic boiled (in broth) beef. So tender, so scrumptious... beef in it's most comforting form. Surrounded by yummy veggies, little shavings of horseradish and that amazing broth. It doesn't get any better than this!
2nd TAFELSPITZ
Casino Salzburg, Salzburg
A tender piece of beef simmering in some light juices and top with horseradish shavings and the veggies it cooked with. What's that weird cigar looking thing, you ask? A potato cigar. Yep. They did that.
REALLY GOOD
3rd TAFELSPITZ
Dinzler Kaffeerösterei AG, Irschenberg
Mrs. C can't help herself... if there's boiled beef on the menu... she's gotta have it! This rendition was pretty good, although the veggies in the pot were not edible due to over mushiness. I love when they supply fresh, crisp ones to be slurped up in the broth. But overall solid. Would have liked a bit more fresh horseradish shavings, as well.
4th VEAL TAFELSPITZ WITH BALSAMIC LENTILS AND WIRSING
Schloßwirtschaft Wildenwart, Frasdorf
The home team (Schloßwirtschaft Wildenwart - our host for the event) takes a swing and gets a BIG HIT! The best plate of the night (along with the tri-sotto, close second) easily. The veal was fork tender and a true testament to the art of tafelspitz technique (boiled in juices for hours), alongside some very tasty pork-infused wirsing - and the unforgettable lentils that were PERFECT with their smoky, tart balsamic finish.
5th TAFELSPITZ
Zur Post, Samerberg
Mrs. C ordered her classic all time favorite - the boiled beef. This rendition was perfection... super tender meat, great broth, perfectly cooked veggies and lots of fresh shaved horseradish. A winner!
6th STEIRISCHES WURZELFLEISCH
Wendelstein, Bayrischzell
A classic from the region (Bavaria, Austria) with many names - although the english translation "boiled meat" doesn't do this tender, fork perfect meat no justice. This time Styrian stylee. The classic Tafelspitz or the Bavarian Tellerfleisch (Plate meat) is less spicy (although I use the term spicy loosely here - no spice at all) and features only beef. This one is beef and pork, simmered for a long time in a fragrant broth with root veggies (Wurzeln) and served with fresh shaved NUCLEAR horseradish.
7th WIENER MELANGE
Gasthof Schloss Aigen, Salzburg
NOT the coffee but 4 different cuts of beautiful, local, organic beef. You can see the brisket and tongue (cured and then cooked) - amazing how a cow can taste so differently depending on where you've grabbed the piece from! Definitely worth noting is the fab hash browns you see in the back - so crunchy, crispy, yummy, perfect. It was hard not to fill up on scoop after scoop of those.
8th TELLERFLEISCH
Hofbräukeller, München
Mrs. C's personal favorite... the boiled beef with horseradish shavings! Super tender and moist, this plate did not disappoint.
9th BONELESS RIB TAFELSPITZ
Herrmannsdorfer Wirtshaus zum Schweinsbräu, Glonn
Holy cow... seriously... this dish deserves worship! A filet of boneless rib that delivers the menu description of 'butter soft', complimented by farm fresh (the restaurant is actually on the farm) veggies and some more of that amazing pesto. Organic, vibrant, AMAZING.
PRETTY GOOD
10th TAFELSPITZ
Schlosswirtschaft Maxlrain, Tuntenhausen
Mrs. C's main dish was a bit of a hit or miss. Two slices of delicate boiled beef were perfection, while one was clearly the 'working end' of that cow. Fresh shaved horseradish and some of the best creamed spinach she's ever had accompanied the dish (horseradish above the meat, spinach under and out of view). Unfortunately the kitchen took so long to get the dishes out that Mrs. C had to eat this room temp on the couch at home after she rushed out to put little C to bed. Oh well... with the first night being so NOT perfect it was easy to go up from there for the rest of the meet-up weekend! :*)
