2020 ALBERT BICHOT MERCUREY BLANC, BURGUNDY, FRANCE
SQ 28, SIN - SEA
BRIEF: “Red Burgundy lovers may know the name of Mercurey as the source of delightful, full-flavoured reds. But white Mercurey is rare. Yet that doesn't mean that it isn't an excellent drink. Mercurey's vineyards are only a few kilometres south of the great White Burgundy village of Chassagne-Montrachet, and the soils are similar, especially when you venture towards the top of the slopes, where most of the Chardonnay is grown. These are chilly sites, and in a warm vintage like 2020 they produce Mercurey's most elegant wines. This example is a delight. It is scented with orange blossom, and reassuringly full-bodied in a round, nutty style. But the scent lingers, as does an appetising, stony minerality from that rocky soil cooled by the breezes coursing over the hillside.”
