REALLY GOOD
1st CARAMELIZED GOAT CHEESE AND ROCKET PEAR SALAD WITH FIG SAUCE
Schlosswirtschaft Maxlrain, Tuntenhausen
Mrs. C can't resist caramelized goat cheese (or goat cheese in any form, actually!) and this was a very nice mix of flavors, from the creamy cheese to the sharp arugula. The fig sauce gave the place a beautiful splash of color, but they could have left the tomatoes out as they just didn't 'fit'... overall a balanced first plate!
2nd SALAD WITH SESAME CRUSTED FISH
Cafe Heiss, Bad Aibling
and this is what the beautiful EVOO went on to. a light summer lunch, pangasius fillet, light and flaky with the crunch from the sesame crust. Mrs. Carastian loved it.
3rd SALAD WITH MUSHROONS
zum Sterzer, Prien am Chiemsee
Mrs. Carastian's choice for a light lunch. A gigantic plate of mixed greens, topped with sauteed button mushrooms and home made "croutons". Good - yet not a revelation of a salad (but then - who expects a revelation and angels singing when the salad is void of Bacon ;-))
4th CRAYFISH SALAD
Hotel und Restaurant Alpenhof, Übersee
Yummers - that is how a crayfish salad should look like. Crayfish, Some spring onions, vinegraitte. done. Tasty as can be.
5th SMOKED CHICKEN, CELERIAC AND FENNEL SALAD, BEETROOT AND HERB SALAD
Jesus College, Oxford
Mr. Carastian's last meal at this year's Conference. and what a promising start this meal had! a nice earthy, rooty chicken salad ("Grandma's chicken salad") on beet carpaccio. add in the drizzle of nice herby oil and you got a winner.
6th HOIB & HOIB
Flötzinger Bräustüberl, Rosenheim
A classic in Bavaria. hoib = halb = half. 50% dumpling, sliced and cut and 50% Wurst (Lyoner). both pickled with Vinegar, some pickles and red onion. perfect little Biergarten dish. add a Weissbier. heaven.
7th WURSTSALAT
Cafe Heiss, Bad Aibling
The perfect hot summer night meal, a cold salad of onions and bologna-like luncheon meat tossed with vinegar. Classic Bavarian beer garden food.
PRETTY GOOD
8th MARINATED RED BEET SALAD WITH SHEEP CHEESE
Dinzler Kaffeerösterei AG, Irschenberg
Collecting our stamps for the Culinary Fall (Kulinarischer Herbst) is a fun part-time job for the Carastians. We got our booklet stamped and enjoyed a nice meal at the Dinzler location which is right off the Autobahn, making for a very gourmet pitstop for travelers. Mr. C had a lovely salad with a nice balance of elements - tart beets, creamy tart cheese, fresh baby greens, light oil dressing. Well done, Dinzler!
9th WILD HERB SALAD WITH SMALL STEAK AND SHRIMP
Landlust Wirtshaus am Reitsberger Hof, Vaterstetten
What a nice dish! And surprising to see a 'surf and turf' like option on a farm - but Mr. C just went with it. ;*) The salad was fresh young greens and herbs with a light balsamic orange vinaigrette. The small white bowl was an herby lemon creme fraiche for the meat, which Mr. C did not use - why ruin a gorgeous piece of beef like that with a sauce! Shrimp surprisingly tasty. Great dish!
NOT FOR ME
10th MIXED SALAD GREENS AND TURKEY
Löwenbräukeller - Das Original, München
Mr Carastian thought he'd go for a light dinner and decided on the mixed salad greens with sprouts cukes and tomatoes- add some Turkey for protein. Boy was he disappointed- almost 12 Eur and the salad was walking the line (and sometimes stumbling over it) between ok and rotting.
11th APPLE ARUGULA SALAD
Chart House, Alexandria
Came out almost freezing, with that much vinegar on that we sent it back. Sadly, it was not the last item we refused in this landlocked version of the love boat (decor wise- an eighties nightmare in pastel)
