AMAZING
1st COUNTING SHEEP
The Fat Duck, Bray
I was suffering from over-fullness at this stage but this dessert was more to my taste, plus some stellar theatre with the levitating pillow
2nd MOUSSE CAKES
KOI Dessert Bar, Chippendale
REYNOLD! If you never watched Australian Masterchef you won’t know what I’m on about, but anyway, I decided to buy a selection of the mousse cakes to take to lunch with my cousin and forgot to make note of what they all were? But in order I’d rank them: Green one: some kind of lychee, yuzu, bright fresh delicious thing Pear one: looks exactly like a pear; tastes like so many kinds of pear goodness. The light brown one: I don’t know what this one was, but it was tasty The black one: espresso mousse with hazelnut on a brownie base? Also very nice!
3rd GINGER PANNACOTTA WITH SAKE POACHED NASHI PEAR
MBER, London
THIS! THIS IS THE REASON TO COME TO THIS RESTAURANT. I mean I don’t even *like* Pannacotta?! I would never have ordered this off the menu. But WOW. It comes with a Yuzu liqueur and a sweet plum liqueur and you have to eat each mouthful in a specific order and it all tastes STUNNING. Such a light bubbly texture and the pear was amazing and the spirits were so good I ordered another two shots of them. YES.
4th BOOZY LAYER CAKES
KOI Dessert Bar, Chippendale
The one at the back was Baileys flavoured, and very nice; the one at the front was even nicer - Piña Colada, really fresh and not overly sweet. Delicious and beautiful!
5th CHOCOLATE PYRAMID FILLED WITH CALAFATE MOUSSE
La Marmita, Punta Arenas
The food at this restaurant was so amazing we came here twice on the one trip. Delicious, complex, Masterchef style delights like this dessert.
REALLY GOOD
6th WINTER SUN
Yauatcha City, London
“exotic fruit mousse, black sesame cream, banana toffee compote” delicious!!
7th MARINATED PEACHES
Darwin Brasserie, London
Refreshing, fresh, delicious summery dessert.
8th BREAD AND BUTTER PUDDING
The Royal Oak The Grumpy Mole Oxted, Oxted
A really lovely dessert! Also came with a little jug of delicious, warm custard. Perfect winter dessert. Pleasantly spiced and a nice texture.
9th CHERRY AMANDINE
Brasserie Blanc - Threadneedle Street, London
This was actually a lot nicer than it looked - a really lovely tart flavour from the fresh cherries; not too sweet, lovely almond and pistachio garnish.
10th PLUM AND SAKE
Yauatcha City, London
“speculoos biscuit, plum compote, sake jelly, créme fraiche mousse, nut, candied orange, plum gel, feuillentine crunch” - difficult to cut in half, delicious to eat!
11th ICE CREAM SANDWICH WITH BLUEBERRY COMPOTE
Granger & Co. Clerkenwell, London
Not quite what I was expecting (it was like an ice cream burger!) but very tasty!
12th PEANUT BUTTER PARFAIT
MBER, London
I mean this was really good, but it was quite rich and we’d really eaten a lot by this point. However, lovely flavour to the parfait and A really nice crispy crunchy layer underneath. The chocolate baileys thing on top was too much for me though.
13th BLACK FOREST CAKE
The Fat Duck, Bray
The problem with an extensive #tastingmenu like the Fat Duck is that at this point in the meal I was already feeling really full. I’m also not a huge Black Forest cake fan so this wasn’t my favourite course. My husband thought it was amazing though!
14th STICKY DATE AND MACADAMIA PUDDING
Leura Garage, Leura
How can one improve on Sticky Date (toffee) pudding? Add macadamias! Deliciously soft pudding with lashings of rich toffee sauce, served with fresh strawberries and vanilla icecream. Delish.
15th TORTA DELLA NONNA
Zero Quattro, Purley
I’ve never had this dessert before, apparently it’s an Italian classic though! This was tasty, sweet with an almond-y hum that felt quite festive. The pastry was like halfway between sponge and shortcrust but not in an unpleasant way. I would have perhaps liked something a bit sharp to cut through the sweetness
16th STRAWBERRY DUSTED DOUGHNUTS
Bill's Battersea Restaurant, London
I was doubtful about the quality of the doughnuts but they were actually pretty decent, and the tangy strawberry dust and silky white chocolate sauce elevated this to ~delicious~
17th BANOFFEE
Whisk Dessert Bar Pop-up, N1 0PS
“Banana with shortbread, lime, caramelised milk, aerated coffee, banana ice cream” So that mousse on top is the aerated coffee. I’m not a huge fan of coffee flavoured things so it was probably my least-favourite element and I wish there wasn’t as much of it, but overall a lovely, complex and tasty dessert with lots of textures and flavours. This second course is where you have to pick from the menu. Such a tough choice! Did I choose wisely? May have to go back and taste some of the other options.
18th RHUBARB AND CUSTARD CREAM
Whisk Dessert Bar Pop-up, N1 0PS
This is the first course in the Whisk tasting menu. The custard is sublime and the rhubarb compote is taaaaaaarrrrrttttttt. So tart. So tart it made me wonder if they added any sugar at all. So tart it made the back of my mouth twinge. Perhaps too tart? But the crunchy crumb and silky rich custard make this still a lovely dish.
19th DULCE CREMEUX
YAOSAI Bar & Asian Restaurant, Elounda
The Peruvian side of this Japanese-Peruvian crossover came out in this dessert. That salted caramel ice cream featured again and was a little underwhelming again, but still a lovely dessert!
20th CHURROS
COYA Angel Court, London
So tasty!! The churros themselves were citrusy- orange and lime flavour I think, the dipping sauce a milk chocolate and dulce de leche combo. YUM
21st BLACKBERRY & APPLE CRUMBLE WITH CUSTARD
The Royal Oak The Grumpy Mole Oxted, Oxted
A tasty crumble with lovely custard but I had to deduct some points for: 1) too much icing sugar on top 2) I would have liked more crumble 3) I ended up with a mouthful of star anise, not ideal.
22nd CRETAN CHEESECAKE
Zeen 1910, Greece
So when I ordered Cheesecake, this was not what I was expecting! It’s described as “Traditional cheesecake with manouri cheese, biscuit, almond, haroupi and tomato strawberry sauce.” Your guess is as good as mine. It was a tasty dish though, the cheese mousse was pleasantly salty to balance out the sweetness from the biscuit and tomato-strawberries? It was a very mildly sweet dessert overall. Nice!
23rd DARK CHOCOLATE SOUFFLE
Restaurant Terrassa, Schisma Elountas
Light, bubbly, chocolatey- it’s a delicious dish, but I feel like something sharp was needed to elevate it. I was also super full at this point so it may have clouded my judgement.
24th KEY LIME PIE
The Star, Matfield
Deliciously tangy lime curd - tart enough to balance out the light meringue and crumbly crust. The ice-cream was also really high quality. Possibly (probably) made in-house.
25th CHURROS WITH DULCE DE LECHE
Boca Cha Cha, London
The churros were super thin and super crunchy. Reminded me a bit of the tempura vegetable sticks I had at Meraki! I wish they were a bit more substantial. The Dulce de Leche tasted lovely.
26th CHOCOLATE COVERED STRAWBERRIES
Zen Lounge, Purley
With freshly ground gold flakes on top! This whole place is Insta-worthy and as it’s a dry bar, they have to pull out other stops to draw people in and make their money! These were lovely chocolate-dipped strawberries! The gold adds nothing to the taste, obvs, but what theatre!
27th FRUIT PLATTER
TAVERNA GIORGOS (JIOVANNI'S), Plaka
Another surprise free dessert course! #Greece Lovely fresh fruit and a syrup-soaked cake. Very nice!
28th CHOCOLATE PEANUT BOMB
The Tudor Rose, Coulsdon
Love the #theatre of the melting #chocolatesphere - inside there was a nugget of sticky toffee pudding and #Peanutbutter. The thick #saltedcaramel sauce was delicious and all the molten flavours combined well, but it lacked contrast. The predominant flavour was sweet sweet sweet. It needed something fresh or acidic to provide some relief from all the sweetness. Even the husband found it “a bit sweet” (which is saying a lot for a man who enjoys eating plain meringues)
29th STICKY TOFFEE PUDDING
The Star, Matfield
A steamed pudding rather than a baked cake/pudding. So has the associated steamed pudding flavour and texture which I quite like, but may not be to everyone’s taste. I would have liked a bit more spice (cinnamon/nutmeg) but it was pretty nice and the icecream was really lovely.
30th THE LITTLE HILL
Mari Vanna, London
This was my husband’s dessert, I’m not a huge black forest fan, so this was probably lost on me, but it’s quite intricate with basically a pyramid of pastry tubes filled with cherries, stacked up and covered with the cream and chocolate.
