REALLY GOOD
1st SPRING ROLLS
Eighty-Three Vietnamese Cuisine, Champaign
BRIEF: “Pork, shrimp, lettuce, noodles, cucumber, and fresh herbs wrapped with rice paper. Served with a peanut dipping sauce.” SOOT’S TAKE: The guy who seemed to run this restaurant raved about these and said the dipping sauce was made-from-scratch. None of that hoisin stuff they serve elsewhere, said he. He was right, these rolls were some of the best I’d had in recent times.
2nd BÁNH HỎI CHẠO TÔM
Phu Quoc Vietnamese & Chinese Restaurant, Cabramatta
BRIEF: “Steam rice noodle with Sugar Cane Prawn.” SOOT’S TAKE: Made a mess rolling these but thankfully they tasted way better than they looked. Herbs were the freshest and most flavorful I’d ever tasted.
3rd AMERICA’S TEST KITCHEN’S GỎI CUỐN | VIETNAMESE SUMMER ROLLS
Soots Cook Nook, Private
These were kind of challenging and you’re only seeing the ones that didn’t have pork and vermicelli busting out of them rice paper skins. Thankfully they taste much better than they look. Let the summer roll on… 😅
PRETTY GOOD
5th GỎI CUỐN FRESH SPRING ROLLS
Jane's Nem (Happy Mansion), Petaling Jaya
With chicken and prawn. Better than my most recent order of gỏi cuốn (which was almost a week ago).
6th GỎI CUỐN THẬP CẤM
SO PHO, Singapore
BRIEF: “Summer Rolls with Prawns, Grilled Chicken & Chicken Ham.” SOOT’S TAKE: My goto when I want a light meal.
7th FRESH SPRING ROLL | GỎI CUỐN TÔM THỊT
Banh Mi Saigon, Singapore
It’s a well-made roll. Would’ve preferred a different dip though.
JUST OK
8th FRESH SPRING ROLL WITH VEGETABLES 鲜越南蔬菜卷
VietSmith - One Holland Village, Singapore
These were definitely missing the prawns I wish we had ordered with the summer rolls (they were all similarly priced) but for one of us wanting veggie. They just tasted meager, perhaps because they didn’t bother replacing the animal protein with anything besides perhaps more rice noodles. 🙄
