AMAZING
1st SIXTEEN-GRAIN RICE 十六穀米
Tsukada Nojo-Westgate, Singapore
Wholesome, nutty and would go with just about anything on the menu.
REALLY GOOD
4th NASI PINGGAN
Spesial Sambal SS @ TTDI, Kuala Lumpur
Nice foil to the incredible heat to come.
5th JEWELLED BASMATI
A Little Farm On The Hill, Bentong
A most delicious rice dish. Smelled nutty and buttery in the way certain butter cookies smell. I’ll wager that there was ghee in this.
7th NASI PUTIH
Rumah Makan Cibiuk Ayer Keroh, Ayer Keroh
There was only enough rice for 2 servings at the restaurant.
8th 丝苗白饭 SUPERIOR STEAMED RICE
Dian Xiao Er, Singapore
Not watered down, not dry and crusty. Every grain seemed cooked to perfection. I ate it all.
9th 糙米饭 BROWN RICE
Dian Xiao Er, Singapore
It's not often I get to have brown rice here, so this was a nice surprise of an option.
10th CHICKEN RICE
Zion Riverside Food Centre, Singapore
I think this was from stall #22 (Uncle Louis Famous something or other)? Serving was tiny but tasty.
11th NASI ULAM | RICE SALAD
Soots Cook Nook, Private
To pair with the beef rendang. It’s a simple dish by the looks of it since it’s essentially cooked rice tossed with a medley of fragrant herbs, dried shrimp and salted fish. And maybe the only cooking involved points to the steaming of rice and dry-frying the dried sea creatures? But when you get down to the actual preparation involved…well, that’s a whole other ball game. #driedshrimp #udangkering #saltedfish #kiamhee #lemongrass #serai #kaffirlimeleaves #daunlimaupurut #turmericleaves #daunkunyit #laksaleaves #daunkesom #thaibasil #torchginger #friedshallots #shallotoil #nasiulam
13th CLAYPOT CHICKEN RICE
Tai Liok Claypot Rice, Singapore
Throwback to the smoky, crusty claypot rice at Alexandra Food Center.
14th BOWL OF CLAYPOT CHICKEN RICE
Tai Liok Claypot Rice, Singapore
To show that there were things other than the rice.
18th NASI DAGANG AYAM
Nyonya Colors The Gardens Mall, Kuala Lumpur
My first time trying this dish. It reminds me of a giant tamale except instead of masa it’s rice steamed in what I believe to be spiced coconut milk and there’s a gigantic chicken drumstick wrapped inside the rice which is in turn enveloped by the banana leaf. I like every element of this dish except the curry which I’m less a fan of.
19th NASI SAUR | BLACK-EYED-PEA RICE | 眉豆饭
Uma Bali, Petaling Jaya
My first time eating Nasi Saur. Accompanied by the flavorful sides of the megibung, it felt more or less like eating regular white rice (Nasi Putih).
20th NASI LIWET
Rumah Makan Cibiuk Ayer Keroh, Ayer Keroh
…so the restaurant replaced half our order of steamed rice with a broth-flavored one.
21st BEKWOH’S NASI KAPIT | PRESSED RICE CAKE
Soots Cook Nook, Private
My first attempt at compressed rice sans the “tragic little plastic pouches.” Served with Kuah Kacang (spicy peanut gravy), Ikan Sambal prepared the day before and Jagung Gaul Niyor (steamed corn with grated coconut) for the kampung Terengganu experience.
22nd COCONUT & SAMBAL’S NASI UDUK | FRIED SHALLOT AND COCONUT RICE
Soots Cook Nook, Private
Fragrant, yet subtle enough not to overwhelm the senses so as to allow the other dishes to shine. Comfort food of the Betawis.
23rd BEEF PEPPER RICE
Pepper Lunch Express - Plaza Singapura, Singapore
Chuck tender and shortplate beef slices served sizzling hot on a teppan with Japanese rice (mildly burned to a crisp at the bottom), crunchy corn, signature margarine and freshly ground pepper. This is pretty great when you've gone 7 hours between meals. My only beef no pun intended)? Needs 100% more beef.
24th JEERA RICE
Khansama Tandoori Village, Singapore
Fragrant basmati rice parboiled with cumin seeds and oriental spices.
25th COOKIE + KATE’S BUILD-YOUR-OWN BUDDHA BOWL
Soots Cook Nook, Private
I made a vegan rice bowl with carrot ginger dressing!
26th LARGE PLATE OF RICE
Seafood Park Pte. Ltd. - Clementi, Singapore
The largest plate of rice I’ve ever been served, which was as generously sized as the other dishes of the evening.
29th PLAIN BASMATI RICE
Indian Curry House, Singapore
“From the hills of India, parboiled.” Now why is Julie Andrews singing in my head? 😳 ⛰🎶
30th CHICKEN HAM & MUSHROOM BAKED RICE
Fusion Spoon at Botanic Gardens, Singapore
Chicken ham roll, mushrooms, carrots, green peas, tomatoes coulis gratin with mixed cheese
