REALLY GOOD
1st NASIB LEMAK SOTONG
Appu Uncle Curry House, Petaling Jaya
Appu Uncle has taken the local favourite of nasi lemak and added a fun ‘fortune’ with it. In Bahasa Malaysia, ‘nasib’ means fate or luck. Hence, Nasib Lemak, a play on Nasi Lemak. Taste wise, this is one of the better nasi lemak bungkus (pre-packed nasi lemak) around. Do come early. Their nasi lemak bungkus (especially the sotong version) usually sells out by 9am.
2nd NASIB LEMAK
Appu Uncle Curry House, Petaling Jaya
Words of wisdom from Appu Uncle. A fortune in a tasty pack of nasi lemak. How can I ever resist! 🤣
3rd NASI LEMAK AYAM GORENG
Ali, Muthu & Ah Hock Kopitiam @ Oasis Sq, Petaling Jaya
That piece of fried chicken was absolutely delicious. Marinated in local herbs and spices and fried to perfection to get that crunchy skin. I could have two portions of that by myself. The rice and sambal isn’t too bad either but the chicken does steal the show. Cluck on.
4th NASI LEMAK WITH FRIED CHICKEN
Lao Mao Cafe, Petaling Jaya
More towards the Chinese style of nasi lemak with the onion sambal and pickled cucumber. Fried chicken was damn tasty! This place also serves one of the best Sarawak laksa in town, one that is approved by several Sarawakian friends.
5th PORK LARD NASI LEMAK W/ CRACKLING SKIN SIUYUK
Lax Lax Restaurant, Petaling Jaya
Comes with fragrant coconut rice, seafood sambal tumis, yuzu shrimp sambal, mirin onsen egg, papadam, ikan bilis, peanuts, pickled vegetables. The siuyuk (roasted pork) here is *chef’s kiss*. And that yuzu shrimp sambal is pretty special too. I would buy a jar of it home if they sell it.
6th NASI LEMAK WITH NYONYA CURRY CHICKEN
Brilliant Nasi Lemak House 億香飲食館, Kuala Lumpur
I’ve always been a fan of the nasi lemak here. The rice is fragrant and the sambal is kick-ass. They have reduced the serving of sambal but just ask for more if you need. No extra charges, unlike a certain popular nasi lemak joint that charges for additional sambal. The curry chicken was thick and flavourful and came with two pieces of meat. Not bad at all for RM9.
7th NASI LEMAK AYAM BAWANG GORENG
Nasi Kandar Penang Road, Petaling Jaya
Jolly good nasi lemak here. You will see almost every table ordering this. The bawang goreng is an excellent addition!
8th NASI LEMAK AYAM GORENG
Botak Nasi Lemak (Sea Park), Petaling Jaya
“2nd best nasi lemak in PJ” (Their words, not mine) Killer sambal! Fried chicken was a nice change from the usual ayam goreng berempah too. Very kruk kruk skin. I do suspect there’s some MSG somewhere though 🤔.
9th NASI LEMAK CURRY PORK
Nasi Lemak Wild Boar, Puchong
The first thing that hit me as soon as I opened that box was the aroma of fragrant curry leaves and spices. That curry was one of the best pork curry I’ve had in a long time. The meat was tender albeit a bit lean and the gravy was thick and rich. Sure, the rice could do with more coconut milk (as do most Indian-style nasi lemak) but honestly I really didn’t care. Salivating as I’m posting this.
10th NASI LEMAK WITH CHICKEN VARUVAL
Dalchini Foods, Petaling Jaya
That sambal and chicken varuval is kick a$$. The chicken especially! I didn’t feel it at first but after a few spoonfuls my nose was watering 😂. Very flavourful stuff!
11th CHICKEN CURRY AND POTATO NASI LEMAK
Big Big Wantan Mee Rice Damansara Jaya, Petaling Jaya
The two sambals are what makes this really good. Not too spicy, not too sweet, with just a very tiny hint of sourness from the lighter one. Rice was ok, as was the chicken curry. I would gladly pay RM7 for this again.
12th NASI LEMAK CLASSIC
Poppo Kanteen Puchong, Puchong
I like how Poppo has switched up some of the accompaniments in the traditional nasi lemak dish. The ikan bilis (dried anchovies) and kacang (peanuts) is seasoned in spices and fried while the usual hard boiled egg is deep fried. The rice is decently fragrant, but it is that sambal that we are so addicted to. Super spicy and addictive, it is indeed killer stuff.
13th FAT SIS RICE
SIS & Co., Petaling Jaya
“Fragrant coconut milk rice served with sambal, anchovies, peanuts, Japanese cucumber, egg and choice of babi belly goreng berempah or pork curry” The rice could have been more lemak, but overall quite a solid version of a local favourite. The fried pork belly was really good! Not at all dry and nicely marinated with herbs and spices. I could snack on those little chunks all day. The chicharrones on the side were a nice change from the usual papadoms or fish crackers. I could snack on those all day too. No guilt at all...
14th NASI LEMAK KERANG RENDANG
Two Sons Bistro @ The Starling, Petaling Jaya
I have to admit, I was quite intimidated by the huge pile of kerang (cockles) when the dish arrived. But one tentative bite later and I was sold. Cooked nicely without being rubbery in rendang spices that helped to cover some of the metallic taste that kerang tends to have, I dare say this was rather addictive. I’d still share though. I don’t think I can handle so much kerang in one sitting 😂.
15th 10-GRAIN RICE NASI LEMAK
Simple Life Healthy Vegetarian Restaurant, Petaling Jaya
Loved this healthier version of nasi lemak. Everything on that plate was good, especially the pumpkin curry.
PRETTY GOOD
16th NASI LEMAK EXTRA SPECIAL (WITH AYAM GORENG KUNYIT DRUMSTICK)
Cinta Ria Cafe & Restaurant, Petaling Jaya
I feel like to a lot of people this would have ticked the Really Good box. The portion is generous, and the piece of turmeric fried chicken was delicious. It really is good but I have rather specific opinions when it comes to nasi lemak. This was almost there, but not quite.
17th NASI LEMAK
Cinta Ria Cafe & Restaurant, Petaling Jaya
Had to settle for nasi lemak biasa as they had already run out of their awesome ayam goreng. No matter though, as the owner very kindly gave me some chicken and potato curry on the house. Really good service here, even without the freebie.
18th NASI LEMAK AYAM GORENG SERAI
Nasi Lemak Lah!, Petaling Jaya
I would say this sits somewhere between Pretty Good and Really Good. Rice and sambal were decent but the lemongrass fried chicken was finger-licking good. Those crispy bits were absolutely addictive!
19th NASI LEMAK
McDonald's SS2 PJ, Petaling Jaya
Ok, I am a little shooketh because this was actually rather decent. I would order this again for sure because that sambal definitely had kick! Good job, Mekdi!
20th NASI LEMAK
Moonkissed, Petaling Jaya
Healthier version of nasi lemak. Comes with a ton of fresh vegetables. Quick tasty!
21st PORK CURRY NASI LEMAK
Lax Lax Restaurant, Petaling Jaya
Good, but ultimately overshadowed by the roasted pork version.
23rd NASI LEMAK AYAM GORENG
SS2 Chow Yang Kopitiam 志昇茶餐室, Petaling Jaya
Rice and sambal was not too bad, although I wish there was more sambal but the fried chicken was really good! Will probably try the chicken rendang next time as that looked pretty tempting too.
24th NASI LEMAK WITH SAMBAL SQUID
Brilliant Nasi Lemak House 億香飲食館, Kuala Lumpur
Food quality has dropped somewhat since the pandemic. Sambal still kicks ass so for now it’s at Pretty Good.
25th NASI LEMAK AYAM GORENG
Restoran Di Naina Nasi Kandar, Puchong
Pretty decent. Sambal had kick, which was nice. I’d probably give the fried chicken a pass next time though.
JUST OK
27th NASI LEMAK DAGING
Village Park Restaurant, Petaling Jaya
Anyone who knows me well enough will know that I absolutely do not like Village Park. But when one is host to a group of visitors from another country who insist on going because they have heard soooo much about them, one has no choice but to oblige. To be fair, the nasi lemak isn’t the worse I’ve had. But then again it isn’t the best either. And the dining experience… I don’t even want to start on that because this review might turn into an essay. End of the day, my friends weren’t exactly impressed by the food either. Go try if you want to. SocMed will insist that you do.
28th NASI LEMAK AYAM GORENG
Sri Steven's Corner OUG, Kuala Lumpur
Rice and sambal were so-so. Fried chicken was good 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼. Best to stick to their naan.
