AMAZING
1st HANGOVER BURGER
Black Sheep MKE, Milwaukee
Bacon, cheddar cheese, sunny egg, sausage gravy on a burger? It equals a delightful brunch burger that is impossible to put down, a truly wonderful combination of flavors with a very flavorful burger to boot. This is absolutely delightful!!!
2nd WISCO BURGER
Oak Barrel Public House, Milwaukee
What a burger!!! Two smash burgers with Muenster, cheddar, and bechamel cheese sauce all on a fluffy potato bun. Oh, and bacon two ways: thick cut and pulled! The pulled bacon was a heavenly experience of tender, flavorful shreds of bacon. I did add a touch of ketchup just for some extra moisture due to the thickness of the bun relative to the burgers, but my goodness what a flavor bomb!!
3rd CLASSIC AJ
AJ Bombers, Milwaukee
What a double cheeseburger!!! Perfect medium rare patties with a great seasoning, perfectly salted. Subbed Colby Jack for the American this normally comes with (because American “cheese” is not cheese!), and added some of the chipotle ranch that comes with the cheese curds and it brought out a new level to this burger.
4th SPROCKET BURGER
Café Benelux, Milwaukee
A lightly toasted pretzel bun houses a colossal amount of well-seasoned beef, bacon, cheddar, and a (runny) fried egg cooked in duck fat. This thing is PACKED with flavor, and perhaps the only complaint of all is how this monstrosity of a burger did NOT stay contained in the bun, and made an absolute mess (a tasty one at that) of falling apart and sliding around with each and every bite. Despite that, it is worth every messy and frustrating bite, for Cafe Benelux has crafted a masterpiece!
5th CHEESEBURGER
Charlie Beinlich's, Northbrook
This is an absolute perfection of the simple cheeseburger. Incredibly tender ground beef that is salted perfectly. A nice slice of melted cheddar and a fresh sesame seed bun lightly toasted that doesn't overstay it's welcome. Hard to be this good yet this simple.
6th BEER CHEESEBURGER
Sobelmans on St. Paul, Milwaukee
An oddity in burger construction but a monstrosity in flavor! A nicely seasoned burger topped with bacon and a heaping glob of spicy beer cheese spread housed within a freshly house-baked burger bun! This would be an above average burger without the cheese, but this is hands-down the best beer cheese spread I've ever tasted. It elevates the flavors here to incredible highs, and the spreadable consistency of it allows for it to get into every nook and cranny of this burger!
7th BRISKET BURGER
Cocktail Corner Bar & Grill, Oshkosh
A savory and well-seasoned medium rare burger is further accentuated by Gouda cheese and an incredibly tender and flavorful beef brisket. Rounded out by two sauces (BBQ and a horseradish garlic aioli), this was a really great burger!
8th BIG BACON BBQ BURGER
Chancery Restaurant & Pub, Mequon
Perfectly seasoned and cooked medium rare on the nose!! Very flavorful BBQ sauce, a touch of crunch in the bun, and just a delightful treat of a burger!!!!
9th REVERE BURGER
Revere's Wells Street Tavern, Delafield
Clean cut, well-seasoned, and oozing with flavor, this is a BBQ bacon burger that does everything well in the most simple way possible. No funny business, all flavor, and a great burger!
10th MAD MAD MAD BURGER
Mad Anthony Brewing Co, Fort Wayne
A really incredible burger! Perfectly cooked medium rare and nicely seasoned, this burger is literally dripping in flavor from bacon, white american cheese, a fried egg, and a rich garlic aioli. This was a total flavor bomb executed well on every element. This absolutely hit the spot!
11th BROWN SUGAR CHEDDAR BURGER
Boulder Tap House - Mankato, Mankato
Labeled as the world’s best burger on the menu, the number of flavors working here deliver on that hype. The BBQ is incredibly savory, incredible seasoning and perfectly cooked burger!
REALLY GOOD
12th WESTERN BURGER
Inventors Brewpub, Port Washington
What a great flavor in this burger! The Cajun spices give this such a great flavor and heat to it that melds perfectly with the pepper jack and BBQ sauce!
13th DOUBLE-B BURGER
Double B's MKE-Style BBQ, West Allis
Wow! A half-pound burger perfectly medium rare that is seasoned very well with salt, pepper, and savory BBQ seasonings. Topped with cheddar cheese, four small pieces of brisket, and the house Kansas City BBQ sauce, this is an absolutely delightful burger! I will say the brisket pieces were a bit fattier than I’d prefer. The burger also could have been served from the seasonings being integrated into the burger blend instead of just the exterior to have those amazing flavors shine throughout each bite instead of just on the crust of the burger. Still a very tasty and messy burger that pairs well with all of the house sauces!
14th BEER CHEESE BURGER
The Stillery - Grafton, Grafton
A really great medium rare burger with bacon and beer cheese sauce on a pretzel bun, oozing with flavor! A delightful burger all around!
15th TRUE GRIT
Hot Head Fried Chicken by Crafty Cow, Milwaukee
While the burger was a touch over my preferred doneness, the flavors on this were simple and exectuted well. Cheddar makes it better, the seasoning is good, and bacon and an AMAZING BBQ sauce add the extra bit to make this a special burger!
16th PUB BURGER
Steny's Tavern & Grill, Milwaukee
A chewy pretzel bun with a crisp crust houses a perfectly cooked angus burger. Well-seasoned on the outside with a nice salt and pepper layer that almost diffused into the grease of the burger, making every juicy bite just that much more savory. I do wish the burger seasonings were blended inside the burger though so it was that flavorful throughout instead of just the surface. The cheddar and provolone melted on top was a tasty and welcome addition of some gooey flavor, and this was a really great burger to eat!
17th MAPLE BACON BURGER
The Brick Pub and Grill, Glendale
While the burger was a touch dry, the flavors were all there. The maple syrup on the bacon was an incredible addition of complex flavor, and blended great with the cheddar and pretzel bun. Though the seasoning was a bit lacking and the pretzel bun was more dry, I still would recommend it just for the maple experience.
18th BACON MAC AND CHEESE BURGER
Buffalo Wild Wings, Oshkosh
A truly special smash burger as a whole that is delightfully sloppy to devour. Nicely browned and seasoned smash patties topped with cheddar cheese (subbed by request instead of American “cheese”), macaroni and cheese, savory bacon that is the right thickness and easy to chew through mid bite, and a hatch chile aioli. The mac and cheese may be somewhat bland and ultimately unnecessary, but there’s enough salt and seasoning that this still works great overall. Very impressive!
19th EGGS, LIES, AND ALIBIS
Pete's Pub, Milwaukee
A weekly special burger with layers of flavor. The beef patty itself was fairly average and decently salted, but not remarkable. Topped with cheesy hashbrowns, sausage gravy, and a sunnyside up egg, this turned into several layers of flavor all sliding around, making a mess, and being tasty along the way. The hashbrowns were not as crispy as I would have liked them, and they could have used more salt too. The sausage gravy was the primary flavor carrier here, creamy and savory notes really rounded this out.
20th BEN’S COWBOY BACON BURGER
Between the Greens, Saukville
Just a touch under seasoned, this burger still had a ton of flavor from being covered in bacon, tons of cheddar, and bbq sauce. A nicely toasted bun holds this greasy monster together, and was worth the mess!
21st BACON CHEESEBURGER
Growlers East Tosa, Wauwatosa
This burger is loaded with varying flavors! The garlic aioli is not too thick or greasy, and compliments the seasoning of the burger, and on a very good brioche hun. The bacon is a touch too thick and nearly a jerky, but it's manageable. I very much wish they had more cheese options beyond American though!!!
22nd SCONNIE BURGER
Café Hollander Mequon, Mequon
Wisconsin food culture in a burger (see: cholesterol bomb)! Served with a cheese curd skewer, cheddar, bier cheese aioli, bacon, and a pretzel bun, it really has it all. The pretzel bun is a bit dense and really requires the moisture from some added ketchup to help the mouth feel, but the flavors are absolutely there! Perfectly cooked burger with a great seasoning!
23rd WISCONSINITE
Foxtown Brewing, Mequon
This is a very tasty burger, with french fries on the bottom of the pretzel bun topped with creamy cheese curds and bacon! A very greasy burger and messy to eat, but packed with flavor, though I do recommend ketchup for an extra splash of flavor and moisture!
PRETTY GOOD
24th THE 1857
Foxtown Brewing, Mequon
This burger has so much good going for it, really excellent flavor from the BBQ and smoked brisket, but there tend to be VERY thick and well done bits of brisket that are closer to beef jerky than anything else, which is hard to manage mid-bite of a burger. Hard to eat, but worth it overall.
25th SMOKED BRISKET BURGER
Firewise BBQ, WI 53214
Smoky ground brisket on a fluffy roll-style bun with cheddar and BBQ sauce with a great amount of heat? Sign me up. Only complaints are it was a little cold and lacked some seasoning.
26th BARNYARD BURGER
Paulie's Pub & Eatery, West Allis
A messy burger where the egg really helped round out this large stack of beef and bacon and cheddar, albeit a touch overcooked to the requested medium rare. With all the layers going on, ketchup was definitely needed for some moisture, and the added flavor was helpful too, as this was missing a noteworthy seasoning for the beef, though it did have a nice char.
27th TRIPLE B BURGER
Eagle Park Brewing Company, Milwaukee
Beef, bacon, and BBQ sauce make for a delicious burger. Topped with a fried egg and on a lightly toasted bun, my only complaint is that this desperately needed cheese between the two burgers to round this out! Adding some cheddar or muenster would really have vaulted this higher in the rankings…
28th RUGGED NORTH
Copper State Brewing Co, Green Bay
A somewhat underseasoned and thick burger topped with provolone cheese, a fried egg, and Bloody Mary aioli. Overall a solid burger just desperately needing more salt to bring out the flavors outside of the aioli.
29th THE DELUXE
Elephant & Castle, Chicago
A solid burger cooked medium rare on the nose, topped with bacon, cheddar cheese, Guinness BBQ sauce, and a chipotle aioli, this is loaded with different flavor profiles. A solid execution that helps make up for an underseasoned burger and an average bun.
30th CHEESEBURGER
The Fatty Patty-Downtown Truck, Milwaukee
A lightly toasted fluffy bun houses a well-seasoned burger that does the right thing by having the seasonings blended throughout the burger… how often so many forget how far salt and pepper alone can go. Unfortunately ruined by fake American “cheese”, this is still a solidly good burger by sheer willpower of the beef and all the flavorful bites it had in store.
