AMAZING
1st THYME SOUP
IKARUS, Salzburg
Sumptuous... a lovely essence of thyme consommé with tiny squares of egg white, one amazing quail egg yolk (cooked to JUST hold the sac together nicely and pop on your tongue) and one bite of sea urchin - a taste sensation. First time treat for both Mr. & Mrs. C... will eat urchin gladly again.
2nd CHICKEN BEER
IKARUS, Salzburg
Here's where the C's parted ways on opinions. The small glass held an intense chicken consommé cooked in beer, reduced down to this super rich essence - which was then topped with a playful beer foam. Mr. C loved it - saying the taste was a fun rendition of beer can chicken like what we do on the grill - which was actually Mrs. C's argument on why she didn't like it. ;*) Matter of taste!
3rd FOREST
IKARUS, Salzburg
Welcome to the funky porcini forest, my friends! The dish arrived with a beautiful nest of all different types of mushrooms surrounding this intriguing little ball of porcini and cream. Then they poured this luscious mushroom broth over the top and WHAM. World's most amazing deconstructed reconstructed cream of mushroom soup.
4th HOT & SOUR SOUP

The clear winner of the lunch, a tasty soup of tangy goodness. Well done, homemade and perfect for a cold wintry day. Would highly recommend!

creamy... curry-y... and yes.. foamy (that dreaded foam...) a rich and wonderful soup. with a tiny mysterious lithe thing in the back..

Mrs. C's soup was just ok... but I do have to give them kudos for making all of their dishes WITHOUT msg - which is what brought us here to try them in the first place.
7th TOPINAMBUR SOUP WITH TRUFFLE FOAM AND SWEET POTATO CRISP
Hotel und Restaurant Alpenhof, Übersee
Course 3 and sh*t gets real. From the Gasthof Zur Post in Törwang comes this sumptuous soup of creamy sunchoke with a delicate truffle foam top and this beautiful piece of art sweet potato/parsley chip sitting on top. LOVELY.
8th PARSLEY CAPPUCCINO
Casino Salzburg, Salzburg
Coming up next was course 2, a beautiful soup in glass (the foam on the top is assumably why they would call it a cappuccino). Mrs. C found it heavy on the white pepper, but Mr. C actually liked that. See? It's all about perspective.
9th GULASH SOUP
Cafe Heiss, Bad Aibling
and the third soup - this time Mr. Carastian's choice. Gulash soup, well balanced flavors of sweet Paprika and some kick to it. little bit of meat and full of those feel good homey flavors.

Clearly it was a soup day for the Carastians. and all in the Bavarian classic range! This one for Mrs. Carastian. Lentil soup, rich, creamy and with added potatoes, carrots and some Wieners - cuz you can't live on lentils alone ;-)))
11th GRIESNOCKERLSUPPE

a wonderful Bavarian classic and little Carastian's choice on this day. Griesnockerl = Grits mixed with egg and butter, formed to dumplings and then cooked in soup. in this case the soup was rich flavorful and delicious Tafelspitz Broth. Beefy tasty wonderful.

zum Sterzer, Prien am Chiemsee
Beautiful rich home made beef broth from making this delicous Austrian dish, Tafelspitz. filled with tasty herb pan cake strips. Perfect on a cool day.
13th MISO SOUP
SHOYA am Viktualienmarkt, München
Next comes the classic miso... with some silky (very fresh, surprisingly!) tofu bits and chewy strips of seaweed.
14th CLEAR SMASHED PUMPKIN SOUP WITH RED BULL AND DUCK DUMPLING
Gasthof Alpenrose, Samerberg
A unique soup course... a pumpkin consommé with pumpkin strips served with a spoon sized bite of a potato and duck greaves dumpling. Tucked underneath were Red Bull marinated carrots. A great idea, but the dish was really calling for something crunchy (the dumpling was a bit soft and fatty) and perhaps a hit of acid. The Red Bull was not enough to balance out the soup.
15th SWEET AND SOUR SOUP

classic Germanise dish. thick, sweet sour soup with an almost syrupy consistency. not what we would order on its own - but with the lunch special (all between 6 and 9 EUR incl. soup OR mini spring rolls OR spring roll)... come to papa!
16th FRENCH ONION SOUP

As Mr. Carastian was expecting the little one to put a massive dent into the Flammkuchen and it was butt freezing cold day in Munich - Onion soup pour moi. Silky, rich oniony, sweet soup. topped with two pieces of bread gratin. good.
17th CREAMY SMOKED BELL PEPPER SOUP

A strange item to order on a warm afternoon but hey... it sounded darn good and IT WAS! Smokey, creamy, almost a bit tomatoey... loved!
18th FLÄDLESUPPE
Gourmet Restaurant avui, Fellbach
Simple but elegant. Flaedel means 'thread' in Schwabian - thus the name for the little tasty strips of pancake in the intense broth.
19th LOBSTER BISQUE
Genussraum & Weinstube Traube, Remshalden
An intriguing item on the menu... a rich lobster bisque for summer? But man oh man was it tasty!
