REALLY GOOD
1st BUTTERMILK FRIED CHICKEN WITH POACHED EGGS ON SOURDOUGH
Ben's Canteen, Clapham Junction, London
Crunchy chicken, at last! Eggs were lovely with radiantly orange yolks. The Hollandaise promised some sort of spice, given the colour, but I couldn’t taste any and I’m not sure it added much to the dish. My complaint is that it lacked a fresh/green element. I would have loved some spinach, shaved cucumber, pickled red cabbage; just something to cut through the richness of the dish.
PRETTY GOOD
2nd CAJUN CHICKEN AND FRIES (KIDS MEAL)
The Schoolhouse, London
Fairly basic #kidsmeal #childmeal from a dedicated #kidsmenu Not exactly a healthy choice, but popular with the toddler. I appreciate they have to go mild on the flavours for kids, but the “Cajun spice” on the Chicken was imperceptible to me...
3rd BUTTERMILK FRIED CHICKEN
The Tudor Rose, Coulsdon
I’m sure I’ve had this on a previous occasion and it was much better. Today was kinda disappointing - the fried chicken coating was not crunchy or crispy, and it’s supposed to be stuffed with ‘Nduja but I only found it in maybe 1/8 of the fillet? I didn’t get any of the heat from it. The apple and cucumber salad was nice - crunchy and refreshing; and the sweet potato fries were pretty good too, but the main element - the #chicken - was a let down.
JUST OK
4th SMASHED AVO CHICKEN BURGER (BUNLESS)
Byron, Dartford
My kingdom for crispy fried chicken! Every fried chicken I’ve had lately has been soggy and it’s such a disappointment. This was supposed to be a burger but I went bunless for a more #lowcarb vibe. The flavour combo seemed good - buttermilk fried chicken, bacon, smashed avocado... but the execution let it down.
