AMAZING
1st RUSSIAN HONEY CAKE
Mari Vanna, London
Wow. I mean, full disclosure, I just really love Russian Honey cake generally. My sister-in-law makes a great one. This was even better! Soft, laden with honey but not sickly sweet (the filling is sour-cream based, I believe?). Just a lovely lovely cake.
2nd CLEMENTINE CAKE
The Little Coffee Shop, South Croydon
DO NOT BE FOOLED by the humble appearance of this little cake! I thought it looked a little basic but took a gamble as I’ve had good cake experiences at this little cafe (“these taste like something you’d bake” says the husband). I was not disappointed! Soft, dense, tangy deliciousness - I was genuinely sad when it was finished. Yum! #bakedgoods #caketime #independentcafe
REALLY GOOD
3rd CARROT AND PISTACHIO CAKE
Konditor, London
I had intended to take a nicer photo of the pre-cut cake, but we got a bit excited! It’s a delicious cake with great texture and a lovely orange marscarpone icing which isn’t sweet at all, so perfect complement to the cake without adding unnecessary sugar. If I were making this, I would have ramped up the spices (MOAR CINNAMON PLS!!!) but it’s a minor grumble. Lovely cake overall.
4th ORANGE & ALMOND CAKE
Jack Little, Penrith
“Holding too many things” photo aside, this was a delicious little orange and almond cake - dense, moist, tangy, yum. #bakedgoods
5th PINEAPPLE UPSIDE DOWN CAKE
Lord Roberts on The Green, Purley
A lovely cake that tastes home-made. Nice texture, good amount of pineapple on top, yum.
6th GINGER LOAF
Lord Roberts on The Green, Purley
This was much better, nice dense yet fluffy texture, nicely spiced and zingy pieces of stem ginger both in and on the cake. The fresh raspberries went really well with it too.
7th CLEMENTINE AND MARSCARPONE CAKE
Costa Purley, Purley
It’s not winning any beauty contests but I was really pleasantly surprised by this cake! Lovely texture, strong clementine flavour and the icing had some nice textural elements as well. Not bad, Costa!
PRETTY GOOD
8th CHOCOLATE ORANGE CAKE
LEON, London
I had fairly average expectations so was pleasantly surprised but this flavoursome little cake!
9th BLUEBERRY ALMOND POLENTA CAKE
The Tudor Rose, Coulsdon
Served warm, with a side of custard and (tinned? Poached?) blueberries, the cake was soft and rich but I didn’t love the gritty polenta texture in this cake.
10th SEA SALT LAVA CHEESE
Kova Patisserie Soho, London
So my brain interpreted “Sea salt lava cheese” to mean “sea salt (caramel) lava cheese(cake)” so as a result I spent a good part of this thinking “WTF am I eating?!” because friends, it’s not a cheesecake at all. It’s a light springy chiffon cake covered in this very salty “cheese” sauce/topping with some light crisp pancakey bits on top and some dried fruits. Honestly I think the cheese was perhaps too salt for me/it needed more of the fruit to balance, but it was certainly unusual and interesting with lots of good textures.
11th BANANA PECAN LOAF
Costa Purley, Purley
It was ok; starting to go a little dry/stale from being pre-cut and I really didn’t like the chalky dried banana pieces on top, but otherwise it was pretty tasty.
12th VEGAN PEAR AND ALMOND CAKE
Lord Roberts on The Green, Purley
Here’s the thing. This cake had a lovely taste but it was DRY. Think about that. A pear (WET) and almond (moisture-enhancing) cake with an actual layer of WET pear slices in it and yet it was dry. So either it was super old, or something went wrong in the baking... my prejudice against vegan baked goods continues...
JUST OK
13th CASSAVA CAKE
Lahpet, London
This tasted like a cold hash brown that was also sweet. No. The ice cream on the flip side was really nice with some nutty textural elements but this cake! Cold! Dry! Chewy! Potatoey! No!
14th LEMON DRIZZLE CAKE
Lord Roberts on The Green, Purley
So disappointing! The banana cake I bought for my son (not pictured) was really good, so I had high hopes for this but it was so dry and crumbly. I mean it’s a *drizzle cake* - by its very nature it should be soaked in syrup! To serve one that’s dry and crumbly is a grave error indeed. 👎
15th MATCHA CAKE
Mr Hamilton's Tea Room, Cobham
The actual flavour wasn’t bad, especially the raspberry in the filling, but it was super dry, like it had been left cut for way too long.
NOT FOR ME
17th ORANGE POLENTA CAKE
Bocketts Farm Park, Fetcham
Not orangey enough and it tasted like sand.
18th LEMON AND ROSEMARY CAKE
Digby's Patisserie, London
Insufficient lemon, non-existent rosemary flavour/smell, and the overall experience was... oily? I don’t know what was going on, but it wasn’t good.
19th ORANGE & POPPYSEED CAKE
Woodcote Green Garden Centre & Nurseries, Wallington
More disappointment! I love orange and poppyseed cake! I expect it to be dense, moist and full of zesty orange flavour. This was dry (had probably been sitting there a while) and tasted of little more than sugar.
20th TOFFEE CAKE
Woodcote Green Garden Centre & Nurseries, Wallington
The husband’s cake, but I had a bite to see if it was better than mine. It was not. And that’s saying something. Another stale cake that tasted like sugar.
