AMAZING
1st FABULOUS
All’Antico Vinaio, Firenze
Quite possibly the greatest sandwich you can get. Seriously. The Fabulous (Favulosa for native speakers) delivers big time. Nothing ordinary about it - freshly baked, still crisp bread, wafer thin Sbriciolona salami (traditional tuscan salami with fennel seed), moisture and flavour coming from homemade pecorino cream and artichoke cream, with juicy spiced aubergines in there as well.
2nd CLASSIC SABICH
Sabich Tchernikhovski, Tel Aviv-Yafo
Packed pita that might look diminutive but it is so full of flavours. Slices of boiled egg, potatoes, fried, eggplant, fresh red cabbage, salad and a big spoon of tahini deliver mouthful after mouthful of great tasting food.
3rd BACON, BRIE & CRANBERRY SANDWICH
Dirty Apron, London
Bacon and brie is one of my favourite sandwich fillings and with a nice cranberry chutney and spinach addition, and a fantastic organic sourdough, this is pretty much a perfect toastie.
4th SABICH
Sabich Frishman, Tel Aviv-Yafo
This is a very good pocket of stuffed pita, packing lots into it like potato fingers, grilled eggplant, cabbage, red onion, tomatoes and pickles. And lots of tahini. Minor criticism is it's not evenly stuffed so the initial bites are unbalanced (tahini dominates) and the end is where all the potato is buried, but not enough sauce makes it down there. Don't get me wrong - it's still a cracking lunchtime treat!
REALLY GOOD
5th BOCADILLO
Bar Oso, Whistler
Super thick, sous vide pork jowl in a warm bocadillo.
6th SCHNITTLAUCHBROT
Cafe Restaurant Tethys-Wien, Wien
Schnittlauchbrot is cream cheese and bread topped with chives. Lots of chives!
