AMAZING
1st CAVATELLI WITH HOT SAUSAGE AND SAGE BUTTER
Frankies 457 Spuntino, New York
Cavatelli with hot sausage in sage butter. Name a better pasta dish in this great city. I'll wait... #pasta #cavatelli
2nd PICI CACIO & PEPE
Padella, London
Pici cacio & pepe. Chewy, noodle-like worms in a sublime peppery cheese sauce. Delicious šŸ‘Œ
3rd SPAGHETTI CARBONARA
Di Beppe Restaurant, Vancouver
Authentic carbonara, made with the awesome foursome: guanciale, pecorino, egg yolk and black pepper šŸ˜‹šŸ‡®šŸ‡¹
4th RAVIOLI
Skopik & Lohn, Wien
Wild boar ravioli with seared mushroom on a cream sauce of bacon and sun-dried tomato. My favourite dish of the night.
5th FUZI WITH BLACK TRUFFLE, MUSHROOM AND PROSCIUTTO
Trattoria Carmen, Dubrovnik
The most truffle-laden pasta I've tasted. Creamy, with savoury mushroom and lots of prosciutto (almost too much) adding to this flavour bomb of a dish. Big portion, big flavour. Superb.
6th FUZI WITH MUSHROOM AND TRUFFLE
Zuzori, Dubrovnik
Very well-balanced dish, blending truffle, mushrooms and dried cepes with traditional Istrian fuzi pasta.
7th MEZZE MANICHE WITH RAGU
Tandem Ristorante, Napoli
9hr ragu that was loaded with sweet tomatoes, red wine and beefy goodness. Perfect pasta shape to get huge chunks of the sauce with every bite. Bellissimo! šŸ‡®šŸ‡¹
8th MEZZE MANICHE ALLA GENEVESE
Tandem Ristorante, Napoli
A restaurant dedicated to slow-cooked ragu was always going to knock it out of the park. This tomato-free Genevese was hearty and demolished in minutes šŸ˜‹
9th BEEF SHIN RAGU
Padella, London
Pappadelle with 8hr Dexter beef shin ragu. So good šŸ‘Œ
REALLY GOOD
10th CACIO E PEPE
Pastaio, London
Bucatini cacio e pepe šŸ˜šŸšŸ‡®šŸ‡¹ šŸ˜‹šŸ‘ŒšŸ»
11th PENNE WITH MUSHROOM AND BACON
La Cantinaccia del Popolo, Sorrento
Really good penne, with funghi and bacon. Onion and garlic give it a nice base and there loads of cheesy sauce (ask the waiter, since it's a tomato sauce on the menu). Delicious šŸ˜‹
12th KARAMELLISIERTE KRAUTFLECKERL
Glacis Beisl, Wien
Pasta with caramelised cabbage doesn't sound like much but this is surprisingly good. Firm al dente bite and a sweet contrast in the cabbage with a hint of caraway seed spice.
13th CACIO E PEPE
Le 5 Terre, London
Could have had more pepper but beautifully creamy and a nice portion
14th FETTUCCINE CARBONARA
Topolino's, St Kilda
Not a traditional recipe but very creamy and good nonetheless. Bonus points for a super generous portion šŸ˜‹
15th CANNELLONI RICOTTA E SPINACI
o Parrucchiano La Favorita, Sorrento
This restaurant invented cannelloni. So it goes without saying they know what they're doing. This is an off-menu variant, made without the usual tomato sauce. The spinach and ricotta filling was very good - not wet nor bland. And there's a generous amount of parmegiana on the table to season/indulge yourself šŸ‘ŒšŸ»šŸ˜‹šŸ‡®šŸ‡¹
16th POLPO PACCHERI
o Parrucchiano La Favorita, Sorrento
Lovely paccheri (giant hoops) with baby octopus in a sweet tomato sauce. Pasta was al dente and the octopus, one of my favourite sea foods) was soft but still familiarly chewy šŸ‘šŸ»šŸ˜‹
17th FETTUCCINE BOLOGNESE
Farelli's Trattoria, Queenstown
Slow braised pork and beef cheek Bolognese with a nicely cooked al dente, freshly made fettuccine. Decent sized portion as well.
18th PASTA WITH POTATO, PROVOLONE AND BACON
Trattoria da Nennella, Napoli
Queued for ages to get in on a crazy busy Saturday night but a little underwhelmed by the quality of the food. This is a humble Neopolitan dish and a carb overload. Loud and frenetic, this is quite the experience.
PRETTY GOOD
19th LAMB PAPPARDELLE
Strawberry Fare, Christchurch
Flavour was alright but a bit under-seasoned for me. Bit strong from the red wine in the braising liquor and also too thin for the pasta - needed tomato paste in it to thicken it so the pasta was coated better. Not sure watercress and pea complemented it either - carrot and onion for more sweetness to offset the wine would've been better. Lastly, I wanted more parmesan, but then again, who doesn't? šŸ˜‚
