REALLY GOOD
1st GREEN TEA WARABIMOCHI
DON DON DONKI Jem, Singapore
Never fails to satisfy one’s need to refresh in this suffocating heat.
2nd GREEN TEA WARABIMOCHI
DON DON DONKI JCube, Singapore
As great a dessert as one should expect on a hot day.
3rd GREEN TEA WARABIMOCHI
DON DON DONKI Clarke Quay Central, Singapore
They rock as much as they look like moss covered rocks. 🍀 #brackenfern
4th GREEN TEA WARABIMOCHI
DON DON DONKI Orchard Central, Singapore
Store-bought and excellent. Refreshing on a searingly hot day.
5th 芭蕉堂/笑来美餅(わらびもち)
Fa-So-La TAX FREE AKIHABARA, Narita
Sweetened gelatinous blobs of goodness perfectly balanced with kinako and matcha powder. I didn’t know warabimochi could be packaged like that? Who knew I’d be able to prepare this at home??
6th 徳屋の本わらびもち
Gion Tokuya, Kyoto
A Tokuya specialty, and essentially what I came for. Their warabimochi is made with a high quality domestically-produced warabi (bracken starch) powder. Served with kuromitsu (black sugar syrup) and kinako (roasted soybean flour). At some point in the menu description, Wasanbon sugar (fine-grained Japanese sugar used in wagashi) was mentioned, but I’m not sure if it made an appearance in the warabi mochi or in the kuromitsu. 🤷🏻‍♀️
PRETTY GOOD
8th BROWN SUGAR WARABIMOCHI
DON DON DONKI Jem, Singapore
Coated with kinako (roasted soy flour). The warabimochi itself is a bit too sweet for me, so it’s going to be green tea version from here on out.
9th わらび餅
Sagano Chikujian, Kyoto
AKA warabimochi AKA gelatinous blobs made of Bracken starch and covered in sweet toasted soybean flour. Refreshing dessert on a hot day.
