AMAZING
1st 山芋焼 YAMAIMO-YAKI
Okonomiyaki Mizuno, Osaka
100% yam and a mother load of scallops because they were so awesome to accommodate my aversion to pork, squid, and shrimp. Absolutely scrumptious! I would come here every week for their freshly prepared, still on the grill okonomiyaki. If I could. If there wasn’t such a CRAZY line to this place.
REALLY GOOD
2nd JUST ONE COOKBOOK’S OKONOMIYAKI | お好み焼き
Soots Cook Nook, Private
Watching teppanyaki chefs prepare okonomiyaki on the hibachi, I’d always assumed this was the sort of thing I might only be able to enjoy at a restaurant. I’m glad to have been proven at least partially wrong as I could still be convinced that what I’ve whipped up in a skillet tastes like okonomiyaki. Yet it doesn’t have all the feels of eating okonomiyaki: the communal experience of having it cooked and served by a chef right in front of you, surrounded by fellow diners, inhaling and being enveloped by the requisite teppan fumes… Perhaps there is something to the idea of eating out when it comes to a dish like okonomiyaki? At any rate, Happy Pancake Day!
3rd MIX OKONOMIYAKI ミックスお好み焼き
Seiwaa Okonomiyaki & Teppanyaki Restaurant, Singapore
Got to grill okonomiyaki myself for the first time today! This was a mix of pork, squid and shrimp. Scrumptious! 😋
4th FOIE GRAS OKONOMIYAKI
Sumo Bar Happy, Singapore
Pan seared foie gras, onsen egg, Japanese mustard greens, black garlic sauce, and sour cream on a fluffy cabbage and pickled onion pancake with okonomiyaki sauce and mayonnaise.
5th OSAKA KITCHEN’S SPECIAL OKONOMIYAKI OSAKA キッチン SPECIAL 🐖🦑🦐🐄🥚
Osaka Kitchen, Singapore
Chef Inoguchi brought me back to Osaka tonight with his 30-min (I’d been warned) okonomiyaki and his antics. I never would’ve guessed he’d been on the job only 7 months!
6th お好み焼 OKONOMI YAKI
Kyoto Teppanyaki Miyabi 京都鉄板焼 雅, Kuala Lumpur
This one included the traditional taro and local lotus root.
7th SAVORY LEEK AND YAM PANCAKE 山芋たつぷりねぎ焼き
Gion Tanto, Kyoto
I think there were stewed beef tendons, kon’nyaku, leek and yams in this.
8th ISSEN-YOSHOKU
Issen Yoshoku, Kyoto
Kyoto-style okonomiyaki. This is the ONLY DISH served here, and for good reason. It’s so tasty and sells so well the store can afford to capitalize on it. It is made from green onion, egg, Sakura shrimp, bonito, red ginger, Wagyu beef, seasoned konnyaku, grilled fish paste, Worcester sauce, seaweed, tempura and of course, flour. The best part is that each dish is prepared after ordering, so you get your Issen-Yoshoku fresh and piping hot.
PRETTY GOOD
9th LOBSTER OKONOMIYAKI
Sumo Bar Happy, Singapore
“Butter poached Boston lobster tail, lobster Koji butter and Japanese mustard greens on a fluffy cabbage and pickled onion pancake with okonomiyaki sauce and mayonnaise.” At a whopping $26, it was pricey for the size (10” in diameter) and for the quality of lobster (frozen). The bar has cool cat art though (2nd pic).
10th KAISEN OKONOMIYAKI 海鲜お好み焼き
SAKAE TEPPANYAKI, Singapore
Japanese seafood pancake that tasted a lot like Korean Pajeon.
JUST OK
11th BEEF OKONOMIYAKI
DON DON DONKI JCube, Singapore
Why does it taste so fake??? 😭😭😭 From the Do:ton teppan stall.
NOT FOR ME
13th HIROSHIMAYAKI
Shakariki 432" @ Desa Sri Hartamas, Kuala Lumpur
Hiroshima-style Okonimiyaki which is essentially yakisoba covered with a skinny omelet and then drenched with a super salty-sweet sauce. It’s a bit much. 😳
