From the BOTANICT booth at the Flavours of Tomorrow Festival. With none of the pesky seafood-y elements I usually either pick at or eat somewhat grudgingly to get out of the way of the flavorful gravy. They replaced these with mushrooms which worked for me.

Purchased from the KAFE SARAWAK JOHOR booth at the Damas Ramadan Market. Spaghetti-like noodles and plant-based garnishes drenched in a piquant fish paste-based gravy. Delicious but the dish could have benefited from more protein. Even half a boiled egg would have elevated it. Significantly.

Best of everything served at this party. A pity it was in such a small bowl.

BRIEF: “Chor Bee Hoon, Laksa Gravy, Coconut Milk, Prawns, Tau Pok, Fish Cake, Boiled Egg, Laksa Leaves, Bean Sprouts, Fried Tau Kee.” SOOT’S TAKE: Pre-Peranakan Museum lunch. Rich from the coconut milk but not overly so. I requested leaving out the bean sprouts and they complied so, yay. 🙌

Noodles served in coconut curry soup with chicken pieces, fishcakes, BBQ pork and tofu.

Vermicelli noodles served in creamy spices Peranakan-style gravy with mussels, prawns, squid, fishcakes, taupok, beansprouts (HOLD the beansprouts!!) and onsen egg.

The star of the buffet table IMO. I had > 1 helping.

Noodles doused in an aromatic spicy coconut broth, served with prawn, fishcake & cucumber. Normally this would also be served with bean sprouts & cockles but I omitted these.

BRIEF: “Heritage recipe. Thick flavourful prawn coconut broth - top with daun kesum, shredded cucumber & kantan leaves. A true Melaccan gem.” SOOT’S TAKE: Had mine with French beans, okra and eggplant. I liked that the egg yolk was jammy.

Had so much potential to be really good but alas, it was let down by a profound lack of seasoning 😭

“Brown rice vermicelli & spiralled veggies in a creamy & spicy almond mylk broth served with grilled tofu, tofu pok and a side of miso sambal.” The Good The miso sambal managed to be both piquant and guilt-free. The Insipid The laksa was let down by the broth which was one-dimensional and overwhelmingly dominated by the aroma and taste of curry powder.

The last time I had this was in 2018 in their Katong location and I remembered enjoying it. Alas, that is no longer the case and this will be the last time for realz. 😞🥵

Blech! Disaster of a dish and a travesty of laksa.
