1st DARK CHOCOLATE SORBET + MACADAMIA BUTTERFLY PEA GELATO
Birds of Paradise Gelato Boutique (Jewel Changi Airport), Singapore
DARK CHOCOLATE SORBET BRIEF: Dark, rich, bittersweet “Our unadulterated premium chocolate couverture teases the tongue with satin smooth decadence.” MACADAMIA BUTTERFLY PEA GELATO BRIEF: Nutty, creamy, smooth “Buttery nuts whirled with butterfly pea flower & a dash of blue salt. Originally created for Wild Rice theatre's cross-cultural opera, The Butterfly Lovers.” SOOT’S TAKE: Everything they said! I enjoyed the dark choc sorbet more because that’s just what I really wanted tonight but I was also thoroughly impressed by how solidly and naturally flavored the blue gelato was with mac nuts.
2nd HOJICHA + ROASTED HAZELNUT ICE CREAM
Churn Ice Cream, Petaling Jaya
HOJICHA BRIEF: “This ice cream brings a toasty and nutty flavour to your palette, with hints of caramel and a subtle smokiness. Rich and satisfying.” ROASTED HAZELNUT BRIEF: “from nut to cone, we grind our hazelnuts into paste, and then into ice creams. Made with love from scratch.” SOOT’S TAKE: Finally tried Churn’s ice cream at @furflebear’s rec and their scoops are as smooth as she raves about. After a few samples, I went with roasted green tea and at my scooper’s recommendation, hazelnut. The latter is truly something special. 😋
3rd VALRHONA DOUBLE CHOC + NUTTY PISTACHIO
Churn Ice Cream, Petaling Jaya
NUTTY PISTACHIO BRIEF: “Handpicked the best pistachio nuts and turned them into these delicious, flavorful pistachio ice creams! Each scoop is a labour of Iove.” VALRHONA DOUBLE CHOC BRIEF: “Rich, bittersweet, creamy Valrhona dark chocolate ice cream which provides the strongest hit of cocoa for true chocoholics.” Note to Self: Lovely flavors from both scoops but 2 is a bit much for a solo indulgence right after a meal 🫠
4th STRAWBERRY BASIL GELATO + PEACH & ROSE SORBET
Birds of Paradise Gelato Boutique (Craig), Singapore
We all needed something refreshing and this really hit the spot. Also my first time trying strawberry basil; someone said it tasted like a caprese salad and she wasn’t wrong!
5th JAZZY BELLE
Sugar Hill Creamery, New York
“BERBERE SPICED BOURBON PECAN.” I would eat this every week if I could. So friggin’ good! 😋
6th CRUNCHY COFFEE WHISKY + RUM & RAISIN ICE CREAM
The Ice Cream Bar Hartamas, Kuala Lumpur
This place serves primarily alcohol-laced ice cream. The Rum & Raisin was delectable but the Crunchy Coffee Whisky atop it was out of this world. I savored every mouthful throughout my 15 min break from the world.
7th TROPICAL TRIO
Piccoli Lotti Damansara Kim, Petaling Jaya
1 o’clock - CEMPEDAK GELATO 5 o’clock - PINK GUAVA ASAM BOI SORBET 9 o’clock - MANGO PASSION SORBET Such refreshing flavors! All excellent and my favorite that day was the pink guava asam boi.
8th SORBETTO CIOCCOLATO E PRUGNA
Gelateria Gondola Chatswood, Chatswood
The plum sorbet is silky smooth and refreshing and I am so glad I paired it with the equally smooth chocolate sorbet because they are a match made in heaven.
9th PEACH & ROSE SORBET
Birds of Paradise Gelato Boutique (Jewel Changi Airport), Singapore
BRIEF: “Pink peaches are paired with fragrant rose petals in this refreshing and tangy sorbet.” SOOT’S TAKE: Such delicate flavors but by no means flavorless. This sings of juicy peach on a breezy, blue-skied summer’s day. I love that it’s not too sweet, not too tart and the rose just barely hints at its existence. Perfection!
10th MEDITERRANEAN SEA SALT SOFUTO 地中海の塩ソフト
Family Mart Southkey, Johor Bahru
Velvety smooth with just the right balance of sweet and salty. I can’t believe I can have such premium soft serve for less than a dollar!
11th HOUJICHA SOFT SERVE ほうじ茶 アイスクリーム
matchaya, Singapore
So smooth, velvety, creamy (without being gross). I love the perfect balance of sweet and bitter. I mean, just PERFECT! 👌 #ifnotheavenly
12th COCONUT MILK + KAFFEE ALMOND FUDGE ICE CREAM กะทิ + แกพที อัลมอนด์ ฟัดจ์
Cafe "Ete", Pa Tong
I can’t help but think of a large dog castration when I stare at that scoop of Kaffee Almond Fudge 🐶
13th BASIL GELATO
Birds of Paradise Gelato Boutique, Singapore
If you can’t already tell from the number of people taking up gelato boutique space within and outside the shop, then you must come here to experience the reason(s) for the success of this place. On this occasion, The @queen.e & I sampled a new flavor: basil. The infusion of basil leaves really did impart a “sweet & mildly spicy bouquet” to the gelato; and did I say how smooth and creamy it was as well?
14th BROWN BUTTER PECAN GELATO
Butterknife Folk, Singapore
Beurre Noisette, caramelized pecans in another hit from Butterknife Folk. So good! It was like eating the ice cream version of caramel corn. I declare this one da winner!
16th PAAN ICE CREAM
Muska KL, Kuala Lumpur
My first time experiencing paan but in the form of ice cream. I tasted subtle notes of anise and fennel, the latter of which was confirmed by our waiter who added that rose also flavored this ice cream. So I’m not sure how much paan I was able to actually taste? At any rate, he also informed me that the resinous bits sprinkled atop the scoop were bits of musk melon (which in India comes in as many as 3 colors) dehydrated and soaked in syrup. Interestingly, this preparation is commonly known as tutti frutti.
17th GELATO AL CIOCCOLATO E PISTACCHIO
Vera Gelateria, Muralto
So good (and cheap!) after a long day in Valle Verzasca.
18th ZABAIONE GELATO
Gelato Lab, Mondol 1 Village Siem Reap
Fior de latte, Organic eggs, Samai dark rum, Marsala wine. This place beats Blue Pumpkin hands down.
19th MARIE'S GELATO
Gelato Lab, Mondol 1 Village Siem Reap
Goodday Photo's selection on our last night in Siem Reap. In mandarino e ciocolatto.
21st CRUNCHY COFFEE WHISKY + VALRHONA CHOCOLATE
The Ice Cream Bar Hartamas, Kuala Lumpur
Still enjoy their ice cream but have to remind self that a double scoop may now be too much.
22nd CRUNCHY CHOCOLATE SORBET
Inside Scoop AEON Mall Tebrau City, Johor Bahru
BRIEF: “Dairy-free indulgence made with Belgian dark chocolate, topped with crunchy, dark chocolate covered cones.” SOOT’S TAKE: I had a hankering for ice cream last night, so this was very nice after over a 12 h wait.
24th PEELIN' CHERRY-FIC
Shake Shack Westgate, Singapore
BRIEF: “Vanilla and chocolate custard blended with fresh bananas, caramel sauce, Lemuel chocolate chunks, sugar cone and topped with a cherry.” SOOT’S TAKE: Very pricey for the size and the hollow in the middle almost feels mocking (WITAF)! The most expensive concrete and the smallest(!) I’ve ever bought myself, but today is a f*ck it all day, so…
25th NOCCIOLA
Burnt Cones Gelato (Sunset Way), Singapore
Limited flavor of the month. Went well with the cone which tasted like toffee.
27th CIOCCOLATO FONDENTE 72%黑巧 | TRUFFLE ISIGNY BRIE 松露伊斯尼布里芝士
Gelato Dal Cuore, Shang Hai Shi
Had hoped to try their Scallion Oil Noodle Gelato but alas, it wasn’t the season for it. So on to the next funky flavor. Truffle Brie as gelato is every bit as intriguing a flavor (but funkier) as the Roquefort blue one once produced by the now defunct Butterknife Folk. Incidentally, it owes its existence to a Singaporean couple who run Gelato Dal Cuore.
29th KAKI BOTOL RUM & RAISIN ICE CREAM
The Ice Cream Bar Hartamas, Kuala Lumpur
BRIEF: “Made for the adventurous, we go a level higher past the sweetness and really get into the flavour of Brugal rum.” SOOT’S TAKE: With 1.5% more of the hard stuff. Otherwise comparable to their standard.
30th GODIVA® ダークチョコレート
FairPrice Ghim Moh Link, Singapore
Thought I’d get this to try on account of there being a 50% discount until I reached self checkout and was informed by a staff member that the discount was contingent on their store membership which I did not have. Upon my request to remove the item from checkout, she started asking other customers at check out for their membership card until one relented and upon scanning it at my checkout machine, granted me the discount! I was mildly shocked at the gesture, but also grateful to be reminded that there is still more than some humanity among us. That being said, this cup was actually really good (smooth and with great chocolate flavor) for the price I ended up paying, so I’m glad for the opportunity to try it.
