AMAZING
1st HOJICHA + ROASTED HAZELNUT ICE CREAM

HOJICHA BRIEF: “This ice cream brings a toasty and nutty flavour to your palette, with hints of caramel and a subtle smokiness. Rich and satisfying.” ROASTED HAZELNUT BRIEF: “from nut to cone, we grind our hazelnuts into paste, and then into ice creams. Made with love from scratch.” SOOT’S TAKE: Finally tried Churn’s ice cream at @furflebear’s rec and their scoops are as smooth as she raves about. After a few samples, I went with roasted green tea and at my scooper’s recommendation, hazelnut. The latter is truly something special. 😋
2nd STRAWBERRY BASIL GELATO + PEACH & ROSE SORBET

We all needed something refreshing and this really hit the spot. Also my first time trying strawberry basil; someone said it tasted like a caprese salad and she wasn’t wrong!

4th CRUNCHY COFFEE WHISKY + RUM & RAISIN ICE CREAM
The Ice Cream Bar Hartamas, Kuala Lumpur
This place serves primarily alcohol-laced ice cream. The Rum & Raisin was delectable but the Crunchy Coffee Whisky atop it was out of this world. I savored every mouthful throughout my 15 min break from the world.

The plum sorbet is silky smooth and refreshing and I am so glad I paired it with the equally smooth chocolate sorbet because they are a match made in heaven.

BRIEF: “Pink peaches are paired with fragrant rose petals in this refreshing and tangy sorbet.” SOOT’S TAKE: Such delicate flavors but by no means flavorless. This sings of juicy peach on a breezy, blue-skied summer’s day. I love that it’s not too sweet, not too tart and the rose just barely hints at its existence. Perfection!

Velvety smooth with just the right balance of sweet and salty. I can’t believe I can have such premium soft serve for less than a dollar!

If you can’t already tell from the number of people taking up gelato boutique space within and outside the shop, then you must come here to experience the reason(s) for the success of this place. On this occasion, The @queen.e & I sampled a new flavor: basil. The infusion of basil leaves really did impart a “sweet & mildly spicy bouquet” to the gelato; and did I say how smooth and creamy it was as well?

Beurre Noisette, caramelized pecans in another hit from Butterknife Folk. So good! It was like eating the ice cream version of caramel corn. I declare this one da winner!

BRIEF: “Our ice cream version of the boozy German cake and brandied cherries from France.” SOOT’S TAKE: This month’s special. They nailed the chocolate part but this was screaming for more kirschwasser! 🍒
18th CHOCOLATE PLUM & HAZELNUT SHORTBREAD (V) + STRAWBERRY HONEY BALSAMIC W/ BLACK PEPPER

Chocolate Plum & Hazelnut Shortbread BRIEF: “A balancing act between subtly-sweet coconut cream and boldly-tart plums. Flakey hazelnut shortbread is peppered with dark chocolate chips for a bit of added bitterness, perfectly complementing the plum’s juicy acidity. We sprinkle crumbles of this delectable shortbread into the coconut cream, swirling with gobs of plum marmalade for a sweet, bright, tangy wonder.” SOOT’S TAKE: Very unique and vegan no less! The seemingly disparate flavors seem to work together. Strawberry Honey Balsamic w/ Black Pepper BRIEF: “A strawberry triple threat. We steal a trick from the Italians, using balsamic and citrusy cubeb black pepper to help coax out the fruit's acidity and brightness. We experimented with several ways to keep rich dairy from obscuring the bright quality of fresh strawberries. Our favorite was to reclaim their acidity with a splash of honey balsamic, then blend in earthy, spicy cubeb pepper to play off the fruitiness. We also weave in generous swaths of strawberry jam, which stays supple when frozen and accosts your senses immediately with that concentrated fruit flavor.” SOOT’S TAKE: Looks almost like the scoop of Chocolate Plum & Hazelnut Shortbread. I can taste the black pepper and a hint of balsamic but the strawberry jam is a bit much for me. I would’ve wanted to taste more of the juicy tartness of strawberries.

BRIEF: “ROARRR for the indulgent treat with an oh-so-familiar taste! Creamy vanilla soft serve, swirled with delicious Milo powder and topped with light and crispy Milo cereal balls for that extra crunch!” SOOT’S TAKE: Great taste + textures. This was always going to be a good idea. 😋
20th PINEAPPLE BASIL + CHILDSBERG SORBET

Pineapple Basil The 🍍 fibers were a bit of a sticking point but that was ultimately overridden by my desire for something refreshing which it was. Still, would definitely be improved with an extra straining step in the process. Childsberg Sorbet I liked the combination of passionfruit and shandy flavors although I tasted none of the beer (probably a good thing).
21st ROQUEFORT BLEU

The FOMO on Butterknife Folk’s gelato (or anything else for that matter) may have finally gotten to yours truly as the dismaying news that they were done forced me to face the prospect of never getting to enjoy their gelato ever again. 😭 My introduction to this homegrown gelateria began on the occasion of @queen.e’s wedding (1859 days ago according to Eaten) where its 2 proprietors dished out my first scoop of Roquefort Bleu. 2 additional visits to their brick and mortar and almost 4 Butterknife Folk-less years later, it blows to hear they will be no more. But I suppose I had always taken for granted that they’d be there some day, some week, month or year for whenever I might be in their neighborhood to pounce on any of their fantastical, Willy Wonka-esque concoctions. The Roquefort Bleu has remained unforgettable since my first taste and so it seemed appropriately bittersweet to return to it as I set out for the first time in my life to order gelato by the pint.

BRIEF: “Made with the Redbelly Citrus blood oranges from Griffiths, NSW [and] from our very own strawberries from our strawberry farm in Dural, NSW.” SOOT’S TAKE: Delish and so refreshing for this strangely searing, dehydrating autumn day. I’m especially partial to the blood orange.

BRIEF: “dark chocolate brandy ice cream with kirsch soaked cherries & chocolate cake” SOOT’S TAKE: I enjoyed this but would never have known it had brandy or even cherries in the ice cream. 😳 The chocolate cake pieces were definitely there, but it would’ve been fairer to name it dark chocolate cake ice cream and do away with the extra dollar charge for the stuff that were (seemingly) MIA.
28th HERSHEY’S STRAWBERRY SUNDAE
