Attempted to recreate an edible memory from Matthew’s (of Bread Ahead) childhood and perhaps that of several other generations. Like so many of @breadahead’s bakes that I’ve attempted, these did not disappoint. They were surprisingly scrumptious despite their rather down-to-earth preparation.
It’s rare to find good cake in these parts because they tend to be dry and crumbly but this was pleasantly moist, fluffy and flavorful. Despite the questionable flavor of rose in the mix, it and all the the things that were nice in this cake came together quite successfully.
It would've been impossible not to crash the birthday party of another party since we all shared the same buffet in the same room. This was for a young lady who was also gifted with a bouquet of what I imagine was a hundred roses. *I can only imagine it was pretty good since I wasn’t technically a guest and nobody in the room was throwing up.
I think the caramel-colored buttercream was salted caramel and the green one was lavender + rose water. A promising ensemble but the cake was ultimately let down by its dryness. At any rate, happy day before National Cake Day!
