REALLY GOOD
1st STIR-FRIED BEEF & ONION BAGUETTE | BÁNH MÌ BÒ XÀO CỦ HÀNH TÂY
Cô Hai Bánh Mì Vietnamese baguette, Singapore
BRIEF: “Pâté, mix butter with egg with cheese cucumber, pickles, coriander, chilli.” SOOT’S TAKE: I usually get this to go and it’s still the best thing they’ve got going for them.
2nd STIR-FRIED BEEF & ONION BAGUETTE | BÁNH MÌ BÒ XÀO CỦ HÀNH TÂY
Cô Hai Bánh Mì Vietnamese baguette, Singapore
This banh mi looks like it may have seen better days from its westward journey home to my gob, but it’s a riot of flavors (I’m detecting coconut, spices, pickle) and textures. Despite its hefty price tag, I’d be excited to try the other offerings at their banh mi stand should I get to visit again. #beef #stirfried #butter #egg #cheese #cucumber #chili
PRETTY GOOD
3rd SALT BAKED ROAST CHICKEN | BÁNH MÌ GÀ XÉ PHAY
Banh Mi Saigon, Singapore
I cannot proclaim to be a fan of the chicken filling but the bread roll was really good.
4th MINI GRILLED PORK BÁNH MÌ
Bambuu Vietnamese Grill & Noodle Bar, Randwick
Just sufficient for what I want in a bánh mì of this size.
5th MACKEREL OTAH WITH HOMEMADE VIETNAMESE MAYONNAISE
Joo Chiat Caphe, Singapore
BRIEF: “Freshly Baked Vietnamese Baguette, Cucumber, Lettuce, Coriander, Chilli, Mackerel Otah, with Homemade Vietnamese Mayonnaise & Homemade Chicken Pate” SOOT’S TAKE: this place seems to marry some local cuisine with the Vietnamese banh mi tradition. It’s a better experience than the pigwich from Your Deli Bite but it still pales in comparison to that unforgettable beef & onion bánh mì at Cô Hai Bánh Mì, and yes, I get that I’m comparing apples with oranges and pears.
6th FAT PORK BANH MI
Fat Saigon Boy, Singapore
With BBQ Lemongrass Pork, Pate, Mayo, Pickled Veg, Coriander, Spring Onion & Onion
NOT FOR ME
7th SPECIAL GREAT BANH MI | BÁNH MÌ ĐẠC BIỆT
Your Deli Bite Banh Mi, Singapore
YDB’s Brief: 4 Type of Ham Pork, Char Siu, Pork Floss, Pate, Butter and Vegetable Sooty’s Take: It’s probably not the banh mi but mi. I mean, me. I really wanted a revelatory moment to transcend my ambivalent relationship with pork after reading rave reviews about virtually every banh mi joint’s classic pork banh mi. Alas, it will never be. I will never embrace pork the same way I’ll never embrace liver from anyone…except maybe from a potential donor.🤞 *Still feeling queasy an hour into eating this although I suspect this is psychosomatic. 🤢 #neveragain
