AMAZING
1st APRICOT FRANGIPANE TART
Grand Central Bakery, Portland
First imagine it whole. Then imagine a whole apricot split in half and maybe charred, adding to its already naturally good flavor. Then imagine it on sweet, delicious almond paste, which is...wait for it...on top of tender, moist, flakey pastry.
2nd TARTE TROPEZIENNE
Ebb & Flow Bakery, New York
Named by Brigitte Bardot! It’s got crunchy, sweet pearl sugar-topped brioche filled with diplomat cream flavored with orange blossom water. Oh that delicate orange blossom flavor in the light creamy cream was ethereally satisfying!
3rd NORMANDY APPLE TOAST
St. Honoré Bakery SE Division, Portland
Rich bread pudding baked in a rum and vanilla flavored custard, topped with apples. Perfect with a ULR latte for a decadent breakfast!
4th CARAMELIZED PEACH BABKA
Butler, NY
The dough was warm & soft & the peaches were soft & caramelized just right: sticky & not too sweet. What an immense pleasure! Thank you, Michelin-starred pastry chef, Chef Butler!
5th POPPYSEED DANISH
Meyers Bageri - Great Northern Food Hall, USA
Crunchy poppy seeds & sesame seeds over light, flakey, buttery layers enfolding moist, sweet marzipan. I loved every bite! There was also some lightly crunchy sweet glassine layer encasing poppyseeds on the bottom. Definitely an experience to repeat!
REALLY GOOD
6th LEMON POPPYSEED CRUFFIN
Supermoon Bakehouse, New York
Now I see what all the hype is about. Rich, dense, but also flakey. My favorite part is the very lemony cream inside & under the white chocolate button on top. It didn’t make the amazing category because it was a little too sweet for me. The nice pink cup of turmeric tea helped balance it out.
7th PETITE FRENCH TOAST
Butler, NY
Light & airy, but substantial. Look at those beautiful air pockets. Brioche dipped in a french toast batter with a little maple added. A bit on the sweet side for me today, but not really too sweet for what it is. Very well baked. I love that they heat it for you!
8th APRICOT PISTACHIO BABKA
Grand Central Bakery, Portland
Thick, but light pastry dough studded with fresh pistachios & dimpled with fresh, moist apricots. Luckily I had a few bites immediately because it was good (a little plain) & when I ate more the next day it was a little dry. I guess when it’s this fresh without preservatives, you have to eat it immediately. It’s here just for the season.
PRETTY GOOD
9th MOON CAKE
Autumn Festival, USA
Happy Autumn Festival! They gave out free moon cakes to celebrate in the park. Hefty! It may be a lotus root filling & something that seemed like another root veg (sweet potato?) inside that. It was good & free is always delicious, but my preference is red bean paste. It was happy idea & I was glad to help celebrate.
