AMAZING
1st MORNING BUN
Ken's Artisan Bakery, Portland
Delicate orange flavor in a buttery, flakey croissant pastry. Heaven!
2nd RASPBERRY KOUIGN AMANN
L'Appartement 4F, New York
Luckily I don’t have to get on a plane for this delectable treat- just walk a few blocks! The kouign amann itself is light, moist inside & crackly outside. The raspberry coating & filling add a lovely tart-sweet element!
3rd CHOCOLATE ENTREMET
Ebb & Flow Bakery, New York
That wasn’t the exact name & I don’t remember all the ingredients, but ooooh, such creamy & deeply flavorful chocolate mousse with a perfect thin cake layer that cuts the richness. Once in a while there’s something nice n crunchy in there, too. In short, it is Good! I bought three different pastries at once because they’re closing for the season. 😥 Unfortunately I forgot to take off the wrapping before I took the pic! 😱 It was glistening, though & pretty.
REALLY GOOD
4th GALLETTE DES ROIS
Ebb & Flow Bakery, New York
Such delicate, flaky layers of pastry. A gentle, tasteful frangipane is in the middle. Quite an artisanal production. I think it would probably go better with tea than the rich coffee I had. I finally got to taste this French Three Kings Cake, celebrating Epiphany. I think I was lucky to stumble upon a superlative one!
PRETTY GOOD
5th GALLETTE DES ROIS
Maison Kayser, New York
It has the light flakey pastry & frangipane inside. It’s almost twice as big as the one I had at Ebb & Flow (& almost twice the price). This was decent but I prefer the one at Ebb & Flow. The frangipane was a little more almondy & maybe moister at Ebb & Flow. Of course I got that one earlier in the day so maybe it was fresher, too.
