AMAZING
1st ATLANTIC HAKE
Colonie, New York
With confit potato, leeks, verjus cream, all done perfectly! The verjus cream is subtly sweet & creamy. The fish is tender and flakey. I don’t know if it was actually better than the other amazing fish on my list because I can’t remember them 😆but it’s the best I’ve had within recent memory. Lovely birthday treat!
2nd HALIBUT SPECIAL
Little Bird Bistro, Portland
A true work of art, visually & gustatorily. Tender, rich halibut over snappy green peas, mushrooms, clams, leek fronds and maybe other morsels. Prepared on a cedar wood plank. The dish had an earthy smoky flavor. Every bit of it was interesting & luscious.
3rd HALIBUT

So tender and moist with a mildly spicy interesting sauce that enhanced the flavor. The accompanying veggies were super fresh!
4th PAN SEARED LOCAL DAYBOAT JOHN DORY

With Porcini Mushroom-Asparagus Risotto, Sautéed Wild Mushrooms and English Peas in a Truffle Emulsion. A light, flakey, sweet fish. The preparation, perhaps along with the freshness, made it outstanding! Don’t hate me ‘cause I have to say...OMG! There was a gentle light crispness on the outside & the interior was moist & tender. But the seasonings & accompaniments- oh the flavors : the earthy quality made me want to keep repeating the experience of each bite. And I did! Even the little perfectly round, intensely green peas were flavorful & had a lovely pop. I am such a lucky birthday..ahem..person!
5th HERRING & POTATOES

The super freshness of the plump herring was what was amazing. It tasted like it was just caught from pristine seas. It was set off well by the al dente potatoes & crisp onions.

Moist, flakey & sweet with thin, crispy skin. Just perfect! Over a fresh bright green mixture of peas, fava beans & greens mixed with herb oil & topped by a light tasty crab salad. Best birthday present!

So interesting! Everything seemed roasted & the herbs complemented the dish. Very earthy and woodsy. This fish was tender & tasty. The skin was crunchy & well-seasoned.

10th HERRING UNDER A FUR COAT

They call it a 7 layer dip & explain it’s a salad with herring, potatoes, onions, carrots, beets, potatoes & eggs. I was looking forward to this signature dish. It was pretty & very fresh & tasty, but I learned I don’t like all these ingredients mixed together. I would’ve been happy with just the herring, potatoes, onions & beets. Very filling!

Basmati, Crispy Wild Rice, Mango, Red Curry & Coconut Sauce. Light, tasty, lightly crisp outside, tender inside. The creamy sauce was fantastic.
