1st GRILLED EEL
うなぎはいばら 築地1号店, Chuo City
We couldn't leave Japan without trying out some eel rice. We happened upon this cute Unadon (eel rice) restaurant in Tsukiji and thought "what better place to try than here!" . Unadon (an abbreviation for unagi donburi, "eel bowl") consists of a donburi style dish filled with steamed white rice, and topped with fillets of eel (unagi) grilled in a style known as kabayaki, similar to teriyaki. The fillets are glazed with a sweetened soy-based sauce, called tare and caramelized, preferably over charcoal fire. The fillets are not flayed, and the grayish skin side is placed faced down. Sufficient tare sauce is poured over so that some of it seeps through the rice underneath. By convention, pulverized dried berries of sanshō are sprinkled on top as seasoning. . The one we tried from this particular restaurant was nothing too special to write home about but the sauce was very flavourful as you'd expect. We were even provided with extra soy sauce in case it wasn’t enough! . 📍Tsukiji Fish Market, Tokyo, JAPAN 💴¥2500 (£17.20)
