REALLY GOOD
1st CRANBERRY PISTACHIO ROLL
lola bySeraiGroup, Kuala Lumpur
Unanimously voted as the best of the day. We even bought more to take home. This one will be a repeat.
3rd RADISH PASTRY
Paradise Dynasty @ Paradigm Mall, Petaling Jaya
Shredded radish in a light and flaky pastry shell. Sounds so simple but tastes so good! We really liked this.
4th NUTELLA CRUFFIN
Dotty's Pastries & Coffee, Kuala Lumpur
Flaky and filled with a generous amount of Nutella. Didn’t expect to like this as much as I did since I wasn’t really that crazy over Nutella but this was good. Best to share this unless you have a crazy sweet tooth.
5th BROWN SUGAR RICE BOWL CAKE
Kwan Kee Store (Malaysia), Petaling Jaya
Hong Kong Michelin Guide 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021. First things first, the Michelin Guide belongs to the original Kwan Kee Store in Hong Kong. When the owner closed the business he passed the store (and the awards by the looks of it) and his recipes to his apprentice who opened up a store in Malaysia. Make of that what you will. Having said that, we really enjoyed the Chinese pastries made here. Lots of negative Google reviews, with some comparing the pastries here to ones that you get from a street market. To me, there is a big difference. Especially in the texture. No “kuih” I buy from the market has that same boing-boing texture that Kwan Kee has. Try it at least once, and then go back to the cheaper versions from the market. One is not better than the other, they’re just different.
6th STEAMED HAWTHORN CAKE
Kwan Kee Store (Malaysia), Petaling Jaya
Hong Kong Michelin Guide 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021. This was reminiscent of the haw flakes that we used to eat when we were in school except with a totally different texture. This one was nice and bouncy and chewy. Very enjoyable if you like the taste of hawthorn.
