REALLY GOOD
1st HANAKO HOTCAKES
Thirdwave Cafe, Kuala Lumpur
Tall matcha hotcakes filled with vanilla bean custard, strawberry compote, rose petals and matcha ice cream. Sounds like there's just too much going on, but it was surprisingly really good. Everything went together nicely, a very harmonious mix on that plate. Can't get enough of this.
2nd LUCKY TAKOYAKI
Yellow Brick Road, Kuala Lumpur
"Pancakes with takoyaki sauce, topped with bonito flakes, Japanese mayo, seaweed, fresh prawns and salmon roe." Tasted like a giant takoyaki and I absolutely loved it.
3rd BROWN SUGAR BUBBLE FLOW SOUFFLÉ
Moge Tee Malaysia, Petaling Jaya
It says soufflé on the menu but it’s actually a soufflé pancake. But damn... this was so good. So soft and fluffy like a unicorn! I’ve never had pearls outside of a drink before so this was a first. And somehow, it worked! Amazeballs. This also came served with a scoop of ice cream which is your usual average commercial scoop, a bit eh. I was told when I ordered this that their soufflé is “Super fresh and made to order” and that there will be a 20-30 minute wait. Best to order this only when you have time to kill.
4th ORIGINAL APAM BALIK
Uncle Jack's Apam Balik, Puchong
There are a few things I really appreciate about this apam balik… - It was made to order. - They have a nifty little hand-held fan to help cool the apam balik down a little before packing it up in a bag for you. This helps prevents sogginess. Still, I would suggest eating it immediately while it’s fresh and hot. - The peanut filling was generous with minimal sugar. No crunching on sugar crystals. Also, the peanuts were still quite chunky and not powdery. - That’s a lot of corn. More than most other apam balik sellers would give. - The pancake itself is thin and crunchy. They’re also really nice people who treat every customer like their long lost friend. Why wouldn’t I want to return to that?
5th BÁNH KHỌT
Mekong Delights, Selangor
Vietnamese mini savoury pancakes.
PRETTY GOOD
6th LEMPENG SAMBAL BILIS
Dapor Cik Oli, Petaling Jaya
Classic Malaysian pancake served with sambal ikan bilis. There is shredded coconut in the pancake which you then eat with the accompanying spicy sambal. So nostalgic. Overall we enjoyed our meal here a lot. The menu is not extensive but they do serve some pretty good Johorean food.
