REALLY GOOD
1st JÄGERMISU GELATO
the Starling, Petaling Jaya
By Shinderella Gelateria. No physical store yet, but they’re currently having a pop-up at Starling Mall until 22 Oct 2023. Jägermeister meets tiramisu. Very pleasantly surprised by how good and smooth the texture of the gelato was. There were also bits of ladyfingers in it and I appreciate the dusting of cocoa powder on the gelato too. Very nice.
2nd ESPRESSO MARTINI
Bojio Space, Petaling Jaya
More boozy than the Baileys. But not in a slap-you-in-the-face kinda hit. More like a gentle warmth creeping up and before you know it, you suddenly feel extra happy and you’re singing along to Adele. Almost amazing for me.
4th SEA SALT SAKURA
Dimpled Artisan Ice Cream, Petaling Jaya
Salty and floral and creamy. Not for everyone but definitely for me. This shot up to my Top 5! Definitely on my repeat list.
6th ORANGE WITH CAMPARI
Crème de la Crème - zmrzlinový salon, Hlavní město Praha
The best ice cream in Prague with the worst photo in the world. I am so sorry.
7th PINEAPPLE BASIL SORBET
Waka Waka Gelato, Petaling Jaya
Very good, with the perfect balance of the pineapple and the basil. Tart and refreshing! One thing to note, there are fibres from the fruit in the sorbet so if you don’t like that, then best to get another flavour.
8th GINGERBREAD & CHRISTMAS SPICE
Waka Waka Gelato, Petaling Jaya
Spice infused base with gingerbread bits thrown in. Would it be too much to ask for dismembered gingerbread man parts to stick out of the gelato? 😜
9th BURNT CHEESECAKE & ALMOND PRALINE
Waka Waka Gelato, Petaling Jaya
Christmas Special. Hoping it’ll stay after the season. It’s a great flavour. Love the almond praline. So, so toasty and crunchy!
10th VECNA’S BLOOD ORANGE
Waka Waka Gelato, Petaling Jaya
Borderline amazing. It’s just packed full of sweet orangey goodness. Clean and simple. They were making a new batch when we went in and the whole shop smelled of fresh oranges!
11th D24 DURIAN - CHUNKY
Waka Waka Gelato, Petaling Jaya
Absolutely yummy durian gelato. It’s almost like eating a frozen version of the actual fruit!
12th DURIAN WITH BROWN SUGAR MOCHI
Inside Scoop IPC Shopping Centre, Petaling Jaya
D24 durian (the GOAT!) ice cream with a brown sugar mochi that tastes like dodol. This was a brilliant combo and we were half tempted to get a tub to go.
13th ROASTED HAZELNUT ICE CREAM
Churn Ice Cream, Petaling Jaya
Super ultra uber smooth. Almost like eating cold nut butter omg. I’ve tried their pistachio flavour on a previous visit, and that was excellent as well. You can really tell that they make their ice cream from scratch.
14th BROWN BUTTER SAGE GELATO
Monarchs & Milkweed Gelato, Singapore
Brown butter flavoured anything is always a win for me and this was no exception. We also had the soursop mint and goma flavours and those were really good as well.
15th BURNT WHITE CHOCOLATE
Monarchs & Milkweed Gelato, Singapore
Love this place! Love the name, love the bright and airy space, love the golden butterflies on the wall, love the flavours… Everything was great here. The staff were kind and friendly as well. This place, we will be returning for sure.
16th STRAWBERRY MILK GELATO
Waka Waka Gelato, Petaling Jaya
I usually give this a pass because I thought hey, how interesting can strawberry milk be? I regret that now because this is so good. We even bought a pint home and had it with some homemade chocolate brioche. Perfect pairing! It’s too bad this doesn’t appear on their menu very often 😭.
17th CITRUS MOJITO SORBET
Waka Waka Gelato, Petaling Jaya
Holy Smokes WOW!!! This was boozy! I was already warned that this would melt fast because they put in a lot of rum but I did not expect THAT much 😂. Goes down too easily, which makes it very dangerous 😅.
18th SARAWAK GULA APONG PARFAIT
Cham Dessert Cafe (Ipoh White Coffee), Puchong
Move over, Gula Melaka. Gula Apong is here to stay. With their tagline of “Local flavours, reimagined” Cham was the perfect place to round up our Malaysia Day celebrations. (I use the term celebrations very loosely. Mostly we just went around eating. Because that’s what Malaysians do best).
19th BLUE MILK | CARAMELIZED STRAWBERRY
Apiary, Singapore
Loved the Blue Milk (milk, blue pea flower & a touch of salt) but the Caramelized Strawberry wins this round. At this point I thought this would be my favourite ice cream/gelato of the trip. Until the following night…
21st CHOCOLATE SORBET
Waka Waka Gelato, Petaling Jaya
Very good! Wish they do this more often, I’ve not had a chance to reorder this flavour 😭.
22nd HAPPY HOUR
Roast Factor Glee, Petaling Jaya
Had this at the recently concluded Coffee Fest but was informed that they carry these flavours at their cafe as well. Happy Hour is a duo of Hoppy Craft Beer and Dark Ale. The beer had a more ‘sunshiney’ flavour with some honey notes while the ale was darker and a little more complex. It was suggested that we mix both flavours together which we happily did, resulting in a combination that brought out the best of both flavours.
23rd PISTACHIO GELATO
Waka Waka Gelato, Petaling Jaya
So toasty and nutty! If you prefer a smooth texture then this is not the gelato for you. I like the texture of the nuts and thoroughly enjoyed this. At least I know they really do use pistachios and not just flavouring 😁.
24th ROASTED WHITE CHOCOLATE WITH ALMOND BRITTLE
FROZEN Paradigm Mall, Petaling Jaya
🎶 Smooth like butter, like a criminal undercover 🎶 Seriously… this one was uber smooth. The best one among the three that we ordered.
26th BANANA KEK NOSTALGIA
Waka Waka Gelato, Petaling Jaya
This REALLY tastes like old-fashioned banana cake!
27th KOKO KRONCHIES
Waka Waka Gelato, Petaling Jaya
Crunchy chocolate cereal and smooth gelato. Breakfast in a frozen form. Genius! We should all start our days like this 😁.
28th PICCOLI PINEAPPLE TART GELATO
Piccoli Lotti Subang Jaya, Subang Jaya
Made with vanilla bean gelato, pineapple sauce with chunks and homemade butter cookies. Lots of different things in this, but they do play well together. It’s not one of those gelatos where you can take a huge spoonful of and just let it slide down your throat, but rather one that you take your time to enjoy and savour the different textures and flavours. This was a limited time only item on their menu for the Lunar New Year but I do hope they bring it back next year.
29th KUK FA GINSENG WITH GOJI
Waka Waka Gelato, Petaling Jaya
Rather unique and definitely an acquired taste as the ginseng flavour is quite prominent. I do love it and wish it was permanent but this is one of their CNY flavours and will probably be taken off the menu soon.
30th PANDAN RAYA
Waka Waka Gelato, Petaling Jaya
Pandan Swiss roll & custard. Another new flavour for Raya. I enjoyed this a lot, with the bits of the Swiss roll in the gelato although I must admit that those who prefer an uber smooth gelato might not like this so much. The pandan flavour really shines here. For me it’s worth buying a tub home.
