AMAZING
1st CHARCOAL CINNAMON SUGAR SOURDONUT
basket break bakehouse, Petaling Jaya
Unfilled charcoal brioche donut dusted in cinnamon sugar. This is the perfect example of how you don’t always need complicated or fancy toppings to make something Amazing. It’s a simple nut, but it’s so good. You need to warm this one up to fully enjoy it. (Actually please do try and warm up all of their sourdonuts before you consume. It’s so good that way). The exterior crisps up ever so slightly, giving way to a soft but pleasurably chewy sourdonut. The taste is more complex than a regular yeasted doughnut. There’s a slight tang from the sourdough and the cinnamon sugar seems to enhance that. It’s really, really good.
REALLY GOOD
2nd MAPLE ALMOND CRUNCH BOMBOLONI
Sugar and I, Subang Jaya
Heavenly! Sugar and I are currently our favourite place for bombolonis. The dough is just so soft and pillowy and they are so generous with the filling. I was almost afraid of breaking the bomboloni when I lifted it out of the box. Gently, gently does it!
4th RED VELVET RASPBERRY CHEESE BOMBOLONI
Sugar and I, Subang Jaya
Happy Valentine’s Day! I tried to be fancy and eat with a fork. Silly idea. Much more satisfying to bite into it and have raspberry cream all over my fingers and face.
6th SAMBAL IKAN BILIS
Sugar and I, Subang Jaya
Limited Time only for Merdeka and Malaysia Day. The OG. SnI’s version of our local favourite Burger Malaysia. This has always been a favourite at the kueh stalls.
7th TUNG KU KAI
Sugar and I, Subang Jaya
Limited Time only for Merdeka and Malaysia Day. Savoury bomboloni with Chinese braised chicken and mushroom. Very tasty!
8th CHICKEN MASALA
Sugar and I, Subang Jaya
Limited Time only for Merdeka and Malaysia Day. SnI decided to come up with a limited time only Merdeka box, featuring 3 bomboloni inspired by Malay, Chinese and Indian flavours. All very good.
9th VANILLA BEAN BOOLEE SOURDONUT
basket break bakehouse, Petaling Jaya
Filled with vanilla bean creme pat and topped with torched housemade marshmallow. We first discovered Basket Break during the pandemic when they were selling sourdonuts online from their home. They were good then, but we felt that the nutz could do with a bit of tweaking. Happy to see that they’ve managed to get a physical space now and their sourdonuts are even better than before!
10th MONSTER COOKIES BOMBOLONI
Sugar and I, Subang Jaya
Stuffed with a mixture of chocolate and their signature Belgian chocolate chip cookies. Wow, this was just delicious. Bite into that soft, fluffy dough and be rewarded with crunchy cookie bits swimming in thick, rich chocolate. Oy... my waistline cries.
11th NIKO NEKO MATCHA BOMBOLONI
Sugar and I, Subang Jaya
Strictly for matcha lovers. This is not one of those mild or delicate or “a hint of matcha” kinda flavour 😉.
12th LEMON GHOSTIE SOURDONUT
basket break bakehouse, Petaling Jaya
Their bestselling lemon curd cream sourdonut topped with a meringue ghostie. Spookified for the Halloween season. Also, my friends… I love you and I know you all know that my love for doughnuts is beyond legendary, but please… y’all gotta stop sending me doughnuts. This bear is starting to look as round as one already! 😅
13th LOTUS BISCOFF BOMBOLONI
Sugar and I, Subang Jaya
I love biscoff and on any other day I would be swooning over this. It is so good, but today this was overshadowed by the Monster Cookies. Nice try Lotus Biscoff.
14th CRIME SCENE BOMBOLONI
Sugar and I, Subang Jaya
Cookies and cream filling. It’s that time of the year when doughnuts run amok.
15th BLOOD & GUTS BOMBOLONI
Sugar and I, Subang Jaya
Crème brûlée glaze and custard filling. It’s a bloody mess.
16th CHUNKY BISCOFF MOUSSE DOUGHNUT
APRONFOOLS, Subang Jaya
Not a flattering picture but a really good doughnut! Soft and fluffy and the biscoff filling was delicious!
17th NUTELLA MOUSSE FILLED DOUGHNUT
APRONFOOLS, Subang Jaya
There was so much filling in this doughnut that it was all over my face by the time I was done with it. Ok maybe slight exaggeration. But it did get messy (in a good way!) Also, I’m loving my handmade plate from Clay Expression 😁.
PRETTY GOOD
18th TARO ATTAPCHEE
Sourbombe Bakery - Wisma Atria, Singapore
A bit on the fence with this one. It’s not offensive, but it wasn’t a love-at-fist-bite kinda situation as well. It did grow on me after a few chomps but with so many flavours to choose from, this would not have been my first choice.
19th BUTCHER’S KNIFE BOMBOLONI
Sugar and I, Subang Jaya
Belgian chocolate filling. Possessed. Also might I add, it was bold of Sugar and I to colour the topping this shade of cement gray 😅.
20th JACK SKELLINGTON BOMBOLONI
Sugar and I, Subang Jaya
Cosmic blueberry filling. Jack had a boo-boo and lost an eye. Things are not looking good for him. “looking good” Geddit? Geddit? I’ll see myself out now…
21st BAVARIAN CUSTARD FILLED DOUGHNUT
APRONFOOLS, Subang Jaya
Got a little smooshed during delivery but still super yummy. I still prefer the chunky biscoff but I wouldn’t complain if I had this in front of me.
22nd APPLE PIE FILLED DOUGHNUT
APRONFOOLS, Subang Jaya
Like an apple pie but in doughnut form and covered in cinnamon sugar. I think the apple chunks could have been softer but other than that, this was good. Wasn’t too sweet as well.
23rd BURNT BASQUE CHEESE
lola bySeraiGroup, Kuala Lumpur
Nice but had zero chance against the pastries.
24th MATCHA CRUMBLE DOUGHNUT
La Boheme Bakery @ Aeon Sunway, Petaling Jaya
It’s alright la. Might repeat if I’m in the mood but I won’t necessarily go running to get one.
25th PROSPERITY RABBIT
Krispy Kreme, Petaling Jaya
Happy Lunar New Year! Doughnut was ok. Soft and fluffy, and thankfully not as sweet as I expected.
26th FRANKIE FRANK
Krispy Kreme @ Mid Valley Megamall, Kuala Lumpur
Happy Halloween! Frankie was good for the first 2-3 bites. After that Frankie got a bit too sweet. Frankie needs to be shared. Sorry Frankie.
JUST OK
27th CHOCOLATE PEANUT BUTTER
Krispy Kreme, Petaling Jaya
Nothing much to say about this. “Just OK” seems to be the perfect description or as we would say here, “OK only la”.
