REALLY GOOD
1st NARADONBURI
Nara Kitchen & Co., Petaling Jaya
Torched salmon, miso zucchini, 63°C organic egg, truffle mayo and shredded seaweed on Japanese rice. Freaking breakfast of champion bears!
2nd KOHAKU TENDON
Tendon Kohaku, Singapore
This was a huge portion of tempura on rice. Apart from the usual deep fried vegetables, there was also chicken, prawn and other seafood. I don’t think any of us managed to finish our bowls that night 😅.
3rd SEASONAL TENDON SAKURA
Tendon Kohaku, Singapore
Soft shell crab, bamboo shoot, prawn, dry sakuraebi, mentai mayo, squid, cresson, chicken breast, baby corn, shiitake. This was good, but be warned... the portion is huge and it’s extremely filling. Be prepared to queue for a table.
4th CHICKEN NANBAN OMUDON
Omulab, Petaling Jaya
This whole bowl was absolutely delicious, from the creamy eggs to the flavourful fried chicken and tasty sauces. Very generous portion too! Sibling#2 ordered the same thing and he said it was umami-overload 😅. Kudos to Omulab as well for being able to make delivery food still look so good. FYI, Omulab uses eggs which have been enriched with astaxanthin, hence the vibrant reddish-orange hue.
5th MEKAJIKI ABURI DON
Yuba Hut, Singapore
Torched swordfish rice bowl. Smaller portion than we expected, and the fish slices were a little thin. Still very tasty nonetheless and we will return to try their rolls!
6th BUTTERMILK GYUDON
Sukiya @ Food Street, IOI Mall, Puchong
Gone in 5 minutes. The smoked buttermilk sauce went really well with the sweet-savoury sauce from the beef and onions. Add a spoonful of their green chili sauce, mix it all up and there you have it. A bowl of comfort food.
PRETTY GOOD
7th TEMPURA DON
Shokudo Japanese Curry Rice, Petaling Jaya
This came with three prawns and some vegetables. Quite a tasty tendon at a very reasonable price of under RM20. I would likely order this again when I run out of things to try here!
8th TONKATSU DON
Extraction - SS2, Petaling Jaya
Huge portion with a thick piece of crispy pork cutlet. Very satisfying!
9th THREE CHEESE GYUDON
Sukiya, Petaling Jaya
“Gyudon topped with a special savory blend of three cheese for even more flavor.” I’d say it’s pretty good for the price. Mix it up before you dig in so that the cheese melts in with the rice. Also, on every table there’s a jar of green chili condiment. That is the key to enjoying the rice bowls here. Do not miss that out!
10th KARA-AGE CHICKEN WITH SESAME SAUCE BOWL
Sukiya Tokyo Bowl & Noodles, Petaling Jaya
Food here is fuss-free, reasonably priced and relatively quite tasty. I’ve ordered this particular rice bowl several times already and I still enjoy it. Make sure you add their green chili condiment to your bowl for that extra kick!
11th HOTATE TOJI DON
Robataya Don, Petaling Jaya
Tasted ok, but needed a little something something... still quite enjoyable and there was quite a generous portion of scallops. Not bad for under RM20.
12th TERIYAKI CHICKEN BOWL
Sukiya Tokyo Bowl & Noodles, Petaling Jaya
Marinated chicken in a sweet and savoury sauce atop a bowl of hot rice. Not mind-blowing but it’s simple and satisfying.
13th TENDON
Washoku Japanese Restaurant, Petaling Jaya
Quite a generous portion for the price you pay. The tempura could be lighter but all in all a satisfying meal.
14th SALMON ABURI MENTAI SET
Washoku Japanese Restaurant, Petaling Jaya
Served with an ice plant salad. Pretty standard but I did like this too. One thing I noticed though is that this place tend to be a bit heavy handed with their sauces. We didn’t mind that but if you’re not one for saucy food then best to let the wait staff know.
17th MALA GYUDON
Sukiya @ Food Street, IOI Mall, Puchong
Needs to be more numbing and spicy for me. Decent enough.
