REALLY GOOD
1st ROAST PORK + CHAR SIEW RICE
Boon Signature Roast Pork, Petaling Jaya
Everything on that plate is good. The roast pork with crispy skin, the juicy melt-in-your-mouth char siew, the rice... everything. Freaking glorious.
2nd PREMIUM CHAR SIEW AND CHICKEN RICE
TNR The Real Charsiew by Sean & Angie, Petaling Jaya
One of the better roasted pork in town. TNR makes char siew that has a nice balance of fat and lean meat with a sticky-sweet caramelized coating. This may be too sweet for some but it is how I like my char siew. Rice is nicely done here too as is the chili dip. Roast chicken is good. Really, what more can you ask for?
PRETTY GOOD
3rd HONEY CHAR SIEW RICE
Old Ipoh Cafe, Kuala Lumpur
The honey BBQ pork had good marination, with a nice caramelized, sticky sweet coating. However I found it a bit on the lean side. A different cut with some fat in it would have made this almost perfect. The rice here is nicely done, as is the chilli dip. Both are very important components when it comes to char siew, siew yoke or chicken rice, so props to Oh Ipoh for getting it right. And of course, the Ipoh taugeh (bean sprouts) must have special mention. Shorter and fatter than the regular taugeh, Ipoh taugeh is reputed to be the best taugeh grown in the country with their crunchy texture and sweet flavour. Put all these together and you’ll have a pretty darn good meal.
