AMAZING
1st FOCACCIA
The Steerage Dining Saloon, Port Washington
This bread is absolutely incredible!!! Served hot with an herb and salt flake seasoning and a garlic tomato oil that is brimming with flavor. An all-time cozy location worth going to for the bread alone!
2nd TUSCAN CHEESE BREAD
Il Porcellino, Chicago
A focaccia-style bread with garlic butter, pecorino romano, parmesan, and mozzarella melted atop! A lovely crispy exterior and a fluffy crumb makes these delightful and dippable with the marinara served alongside!
REALLY GOOD
3rd DINNER ROLLS
Moonlight Tavern & Supper Club, Port Washington
How can a simple bread be so good?! Flaky and tender, and definitely with the right salt % in the dough, this is super tasty and a great primer for dinner!
4th CHEESE BREAD
Balistreri's Italian-American Ristorante, Wauwatosa
A very nicely toasted slice with a gooey cheese that made this a simple and well executed appetizer! Truly no notes, only nom!
5th BREAD ROLL
St. Andrews Golf and Country Club, West Chicago
A hearty bread with a lovely crust and a tender crumb filled with a rich flavor of properly made bread. Hard to eat just one of these!
6th PRETZEL ROLL
Steny's Tavern & Grill, Milwaukee
A subtly salty exterior on this pretzel roll serves as a thin and crusty outside housing a very tender and doughy crumb. I would eat these daily if I could!!!
7th BAGUETTE
Panera Bread, Delafield
A fresh baked baguette with a nice crust and flavorful crumb, excellent flavor and great standalone or for dipping!
8th VEGANSTIX
Toppers Pizza, Milwaukee
A tender yet dense dough nearly gives an underbaked texture that works great with whatever dairy-free witchcraft added flavor on top. A robust marinara and sriracha ranch were great dipping sauces as well!
9th FRENCH BREAD W/ GOAT CHEESE DIP
Union House Cedarburg | Restaurant & Bar, Cedarburg
A plain french bread with a fairly dense crumb that could use a higher amount of salt, but has a nice crust. The tomato sauce is absolutely extravagant packed with robust flavors of herbs and salt and olive oil. The goat cheese is very heavy and creamy, and… not tasty. I’d much rather just have the bread and tomato here, the goat cheese just clashes. Despite that, this is very good and worth ordering!
PRETTY GOOD
10th GARLIC CHEESE ROLL
Exmoor Country Club, Highland Park
A lot of flavor from the golden crisp exterior from the baked cheddar and subtle garlic glaze really helps make up for a standard hard roll with no true substance, and a bit firm of a crumb.
11th BREAD
The Smith, Chicago
A hearty and tender crumb with a crisp and chewy crust, this had a fair amount of flavor in its dough and did not require the butter to be eaten. A solid complimentary bread.
12th GARLIC BREAD
Il Porcellino, Chicago
A very fluffy savory bread, but doesn’t have quite as much garlic as I would have liked. Excellent crust, and pairs VERY well with the prime meatballs!
13th CORNBREAD
Foxtown Brewing, Mequon
Lightly topped with honey, this crumbly cornbread is rich and creamy with a nice homey flavor. A simple, good, average cornbread.
14th GARLIC KNOT
Sal's Pizza Cedarburg, Cedarburg
A nice and tender bread, but lacking flavor overall. The hints of garlic and salt were nice, but more was needed to make these sing. Not bad, but definitely room for improvement.
NOT FOR ME
15th GARLIC KNOTS
Reginelli's Pizzeria, New Orleans
These garlic knots were rather disappointing… the garlic was way too thick and chunky. The bread was good, but having a massive pile of garlic slapped on top does not make these good garlic knots nor appetizing.
16th GARLIC BREAD
O'Lydia's Bar and Grill, Milwaukee
A bland flatbread with no actual garlic flavor despite chunks of garlic being strewn on top of the bread. Unbelievably bland.
17th VEGAN BREADSTICKS
Ian's Pizza Milwaukee | Downtown, Milwaukee
Took one bite and put it back. Bland. Empty. Soulless. Dull. Please no.
18th GARLIC BREAD
The Pasta Shoppe, Port Washington
Bread was very dry and bland. Not worth the time. The pool of grease at the bottom was rather entertaining for the table however.
