AMAZING
1st EGGS
Reitsberger-Hof, Vaterstetten
it is a fact now! it is written on a sign!!! "he who eats eggs stays thin"! great free range, farm fresh eggs at the weekly Farmers Market at the Reitsberger Farm. Mr. Reitsberger, newly elected mayor of this suburb of Munich (and although his people are the usual office drones/ upper middle class, he is still an active farmer!) does a lot for the community. his farm is open to all families with kids to explore, see animals, pet them, feel them run around on the property, play on the playground he put up. All that while the parents eat in his locally produced food Restaurant, or shop at the farmers market. LOVE THAT PLACE.
2nd EGG PORN IN WECK GLASS
Osteria in Bad Aibling, Bad Aibling
what a kinky little dish... two free range (of course) eggs, soft boiled and served in a Weck glass, doing their oozy yolky business... Mr. Carastian watched, filmed and then dove right in.
3rd SMOKED COD'S ROE, POTATO & HEN'S EGG
St John Bread and Wine, London
Serving small plates meant to be shared - we opted for a nice selection from the intriguing menu that's split into time frames (for when you can order what dish). Complicated? Maybe. Delicious? Oh yeah. This tiny plate held one beautifully perfect egg, sprouts, smoked cod roe creamy spread on a bed of crispy potato slices. Divine.
REALLY GOOD
4th HUEVOS MEXICANOS
The Walnut Avenue Cafe, Santa Cruz
Mrs Carastian's Scrambled south of the border style eggs, jalapeños, avocado, tomatoes and cheese. Served with black beans and corn or flour tortilla. The verdict: rather bland- needed lots of hot sauce. This dish probably didn't qualify them for best breakfast in 2013 of the Santa Cruz weekly...
5th TWO EGGS IN A GLASS
Backspielhaus Restaurant, München
Mrs. Carastians addition to the breakfast. two soft boiled eggs, served in a glass. perfectly soft boiled, great fresh taste - insane price (6 EUR if I recall correctly. darn you Munich prices!!)
NOT FOR ME
6th POACHED EGGS ON TOAST
Patisserie Valerie - Oxford, Oxford
So here we have a lovely location (a historic building that was part of the Oxford University centuries ago) and a reasonable enough boutique bakery chain (sadly it was the ONLY place open early for breakfast - life with little C beings at the crack of dawn) but the breakfast came with mixed reviews. First we have these sad looking eggs that resemble some sort of wall-eyed zombie eyes and tasted a bit like them, as well. And boring old toast. With a packaged butter - yet at least it was "French", as the place pretends to be. The Service? perfect. In General? Epic fail.
