jeehova's Burrito list
This is going to be a bit long - advance warning š So, I have had a twenty-five year long obsession with āchipotle styleā burritos. When I was a university student, I had weeks where I would smash a chipotle burrito for lunch every single weekday. And then on Fridays Iād have another for dinner - for a total of six burritos in seven days. I couldnāt get enough... Needless to say, Iām a bit of a burrito connoisseur. Are these authentic mexican burritos? Of course theyāre not. But do even real-life, full-blooded Mexicans appreciate this bastardised combination of cultures and freshness, stuffed into a tortilla? Absolutely!
That said, when I moved to the UK, the lack of Chipotle restaurants (or even copycats, for that matter) put me into hard-core withdrawal. Every trip back to the States, Iād order six extra, freeze them, and bring them back to the UK and thaw one out for myself as a treat every once in a while. THAT is what you call true foodie madness! ššš
Eventually they did open Chipotles in the UK - but the issue are that the corn is different, the rice is different... the tortilla is also made slightly differently. It all adds up to a slight weirdness, for me at least. There are many other challengers now as well - some better than others.
So in 2007, when Chilango hit the scene in the UK (and fortuitously, near my flat!) I went on opening night and was surprised to find that they were creating burritos that were EVEN BETTER THAN CHIPOTLEāS ORIGINAL USA āRECIPEā!!
We went back every night that week. And since then, my 11 year burrito habit is satiated by this fine establishment.
Each Chilango restaurant is slightly different - in fact, some are less than stellar - but the Upper Street location in Angel is still the best. The cheese has changed (I do prefer the older one, tbh) but overall, this prawn burrito is THE epitome of burrito culture.
I get it with black beans AND peppers, rice, mild (tomato) and hot (green) sauces... lettuce, and with extra cheese and sour cream... all topped off with a vinegar based hot sauce we all know and love (I feel it works best with this in terms of flavour). You donāt eveb have to be a prawn lover to appreciate this thing.
Please give it a go. You wonāt regret it! šÆšÆšÆšÆšÆšÆ
